Barberstown Castle

    Barberstown Castle
 in Straffan

Overview

Gathering accolades and distinctions from centuries of distinguished guests, Barberstown Castle’s rich and colorful heritage makes it an Irish treasure with more than 800 years of stories to recite next to its glowing fireplaces. From Lord Dunsaney to Arnold Palmer, from Sean Connery to Bob Dylan, this historic castle is where discriminating travelers embark on journeys through Irish history that combine comfortable yet elegant accommodations with explorations of the Emerald Isle. Guests are invited to create new memories at this cherished hotel in County Kildare and encouraged to meld with nature, make cultural discoveries, and bask in the splendor of the pristine, 20 acres/8 hectares of gardens.

Although the castle only recently opened its doors as a hotel in 1971, footsteps from guests long past have walked its astute halls. Originally built eight centuries ago as a fortress to protect the village and people of Barberstown from the attack of the rebellious Vi Faelain, Barberstown has since had 37 owners, each who protected its heritage and character, making it an emerald treasure of gardens and inspired architecture in the Irish countryside. Owners have skillfully maintained the elegance of design by sympathetically blending its Victorian and Elizabethan extensions with the original castle battlement of 1288.

Barberstown Castle’s historic accommodations inspire travelers to reach beyond known worlds and to indulge themselves with authentic Irish culture and hospitality, dine on exquisite cuisine, and experience moments that are to be treasured, remembered, and never forgotten.

Barberstown Castle, a charter member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2011, dates back to 1288.

Fun FactThe castle was built as a fortress to protect the village and people of Barberstown from the attack of Vi Faelain, who tried to burn the town in 1310.
