History

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge began as ten large luxury tents on the shores of Lac Beauvert in 1915, often referred to as “Tent City.” The tents had wooden floors and walls, and included a main dining tent that became a socializing area in the evening where guests played cards and visited. The Canadian National Railways took over Tent City in 1921, renovating the area with eight log cabins. Jasper Park Lodge officially opened in June 1922, with the main building and additional cabins added by 1923. The main building was billed as the largest single-story log structure in the world at the time.

The lodge’s world famous golf course was added at this time as well. Designed by world renowned architect Stanley Thompson, the course featured Thompson’s signature “natural artistry,” with a course that is framed by snow-capped mountains and glacial-fed lakes, that works its way through a wildlife corridor. Thompson's vision led to a world-class course in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage site, where the fairways are carved through the surrounding forests and priority is given to the natural contours of the mountains. As a result, the par 71 course features elevated tee boxes, dramatic bunkers, and vistas of the surrounding mountain peaks.

In 1927, the film The Country Beyond was filmed on location at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. That was quickly followed by Under Suspicion, The Emperor Waltz, River of No Return, and The Far Country. This invited such stars as Marilyn Monroe, Jimmy Stewart, and Bing Crosby, who was a big fan of the golf course. He went on to win the Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club Totem Pole Tournament in 1947, which is why there is a cabin named after him today.

However, celebrities were not the only ones to visit; royalty came too. In 1939, the hotel hosted King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in the Outlook Cabin. In 2000, the Outlook Cabin unfortunately burned down, but because there was so much history with the building, the lodge decided to rebuild the cabin and keep the elements as close to the original as possible. To achieve this, the same blueprints were used and the original furniture and artwork were replicated, but the building has an additional 600 square feet of space to allow for wheelchair access. In 2005, the Outlook Cabin was once again graced by royalty, this time with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who were visiting to celebrate the British Columbia's 100th anniversary. The cabin was renamed the Royal’s Retreat.

The original main building was sadly destroyed by a fire in 1952, but a new foundation was poured by that September and construction was completed by June the next year. It features stunning views of the lakes surrounding the area, to epitomize the Grand Rocky Mountain Experience. This led to most of the original log cabins being replaced with modern cedar cabins in the 1940s and 1950s, and construction of an outdoor heated pool, tennis courts, a golf club house, and suites in the 1960s and 1970s. The lodge was promoted from a summer resort to a four-season resort in 1988.

Recently, more than $16 million has been put into renovations. The extensive project will touch almost every area of the resort, further enhancing the guest experience for years to come. This substantial investment and grand vision is another milestone in the rich history of the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. The refurbishing of guestrooms have ensured that the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge will remain a four-season, four-star destination resort for centuries to come.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2018, dates back to 1922.
