History

Built in just 18 months, Fairmont Le Montreux Palace was set upon a romantic landscape next to Lake Geneva in 1906. The location, surrounded by mountains, vineyards, fields, and forests, is said to have inspired works from both Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Lord Byron. It was built next to Hotel du Cygne, with the two being connected by the Salon de Musique. The palace was one of the few that offered heating, electricity, and baths with hot and cold running water. Themed parties were held at the palace, including fancy balls, concerts, and other social occasions that attracted guests worldwide.

While World War I was in full swing, the hotel was being used to care for wounded Allied soldiers. After the end of the war, the 1920s saw the rich and famous clientele return. This renewal even saw the signing of a major international treaty when representatives of Greece, Turkey, England, France, and Russia negotiated the Montreux Convention. This treaty, which governs access to the Black Sea and is still an important piece of international law, was signed at the hotel on July 20, 1936 and has become known as the Montreux Convention. Just three years later, casualties from World War II began mounting and the hotel was again used as a shelter for Allied soldiers.

Throughout the years, many renovations and changes were made to the palace, including staff accommodations being converted to guestrooms, the pavilion being transformed into a convention center, and several other additions and renovations. Due to its significant historical importance, Fairmont Le Montreux Palace was been classified as a cultural property of national importance.

Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2018, dates back to 1906.
