Fairmont Palliser

History:
    Fairmont Palliser

History

Fairmont Palliser opened in June 1914 due to the Canadian Pacific Railway’s (CPR) growth toward the west. After an influx of tourists, General Manager of the CPR William Van Home decided that since the scenery could not be exported, the tourists would be imported. The fruition of that idea is what is now known as Fairmont Palliser.

Called “The Palliser” in the early days, it was named after Captain John Palliser, a local explorer in the 1850s. Built in the Edwardian Commercial style, architect Lawrence Gotch decided the hotel would be built in the Chicago School style. Straight geometric lines that resembled the prairie grain elevators in Alberta were also an inspiration. The service floors, shaped like an E, were designed to open all rooms to outside light. The eight floor Palliser was outfitted with oak paneling, candelabras, marble floors and columns, and featured handmade rugs and one-of-a-kind art. The 350 guestrooms featured mahogany doors, brass beds, and windows. In 1929, the building was enlarged. Recently, the hotel was renovated and restored, with upgrades totaling $30 million dollars.

The hotel once featured Captain John Palliser’s family crest, but in June 1993, just three years after Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited, the Crown bestowed a Heraldic Badge to Fairmont Palliser, the first time this happened for any hotel. This led to a new crest being created with the provincial flowers of Alberta (the wild rose) being heavily represented as well as wavy lines that represent the Bow and Elbow Rivers. Though the new crest still paid homage to the original Palliser crest to honor the family and the Captain, Fairmont Palliser now has its own.

Fairmont Palliser, a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2018, dates back to 1914.
