  • It has goods and bads

We stayed for almost a a week, as our family vacation. The hotel has good and bad sides.
The good side: it's located in downtown M?rida, a short walking distance to the main square, Cathedral and Paseo Montejo. The building is a luxurious colonial house from the henequ?n era of Yucat?n, decorated in a Neoclassical style. It has a nice pool, and the personnel is very helpful and friendly. The restaurant serves from breakfast to supper, and there's also a bar. There's WiFi all around the hotel, although with different passwords, so you have to log into all of them on your phone the first day. It also has a parking lot free of charge.
The bad side: it lacks maintenance and it shows. The first day the bathroom's ceiling collapsed. We were assigned to another room. The new room had a clogged bathtub and the air conditioner leaked so much we had to put the dustbin below. The next day they were very kind and fixed everything. Some areas are not clean enough. The hotel should pay attention to the general cleanliness. Also, the TV was too small.
In general, the hotel is quite nice, located close to main square, personnel is very friendly and helpful, the price is fair, but it needs some maintenance and cleaning. We enjoyed our stay here.

  • Highly recommended - fantastic, luxury hotel at budget prices.

From the very beginning of the stay, we were trying to figure out the catch - the property is an amazing place for an amazing value, and we couldn't figure out why it was so inexpensive and not packed.

To clarify a few previous reviews: The wifi in our room (3rd floor) was excellent - fast, consistent, etc. I was able to work remotely effectively. Either previous reviewers had a different room or the issue has been fixed. The wifi was also fine throughout the property. Everything else seems to be on par with previous reviews - pool excellent, lobby gorgeous, AC fantastic, etc.

Location: It's only 2-3 blocks from one of the best squares, good restaurants, etc. The immediate block isn't really "happening," but it certainly felt safe, and very convenient. Bellman: Fantastic service and a real sense of ownership/investment in the property. Same with housekeeping.

Front desk staff: No issues really, but not very enthusiastic and more flat in their interaction. No service errors.

  • Needs improvement.

We stayed here Good Friday. If you've never been to Merida on Good Friday, you have not lived a Christian life. The people are believers, who worship in a 450ish year old church. Our first choice was the Delores Alba, but they were booked. The Gran Real is a NICE midpriced hotel in the historic district. Our tv's didn't work (no big deal) the a/c was not up to the task as it was 98 degrees. I would stay here again, no question.

  • Nice for tourists, awful for businessmen

Am staying in the hotel currently. Hotel is an old building, beautifully preserved. Rooms are ample and have all the basic services available. Pool is ok, nothing too big but adequate, and breakfast is a buffet with many choices.
However...wifi is actual hell on earth. I'm talking 5000mbps responses which makes Netflix, checking emails, downloading ANYTHING...IMPOSSIBLE. I'm talking about wifi in the rooms, apparently wifi in the lobby is better, but one can't have a video conference in the lobby right? When I called and asked if there was something wrong, they simply told me that since the hotel is completely booked, wifi is a bit slower. A bit?!? I couldn't open a simple Google search!! My recommendation? If you know you are having a month or so of complete booking, please pay a little extra those months and amplify your bandwidth or whatever it is that makes it impossible having any sort of business activity at the room. Thanks!

  • I would give it a 4.5 if I could!

There are many amenities here. In the bathroom, a blowdryer, lighted magnifying mirror and even a telephone! There is a coffee pot, with a first day package of ground coffee and bottled water. Surprisingly, there were also enough electric outlets.Plenty of granite topped furniture, large closet in the vestibule, and balcony. We had a view of the pool. The grounds are lush, with many palms in the courtyard. It was very hot here in March, do the shade in the pool area was appreciated. Tour buses came and went without much noise or disturbance. The free parking was very convenient next door to the hotel. Our room had newer furniture and bedding that was comfortable ( after we reversed the plastic mattress cover!) We were about 5 blocks from the main square. A good location on a less bust street than some other places we've stayed in Merida. Although the reception wasn't super welcoming, the bellhop Victor from Portugal was very friendly and helpful. The bar area has a beautiful stained glass atrium, and the lobby is large with plenty of sitting areas. I would say thus is a pretty goid value for the heart of Merida.
