Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin

Overview

Just a short distance between Amsterdam and The Hague in Noordwijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, the Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin welcomes guests to a historic seaside haven of exclusivity. This elegant five-star deluxe beach retreat has been offering fantastic views of the majestic North Sea to visitors for more than a century.

In 1880, the local population in Noordwijk depended on fishing. Then mayor, Pické, thought that Noordwijk had considerably more to offer, and his vision of a seaside resort was born. In 1883, Pické broke ground on the highest point of the dunes in spectacular Noordwijk Beach, and the stately Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin opened two years later. Also opening in 1885 in nearby Amsterdam, was the richly ornamented Rijksmuseum, a cultural icon and the most important national museum in the Netherlands.

With its long stretch of sandy white beach, Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin regularly welcomed the royal families of the Netherlands and Belgium through its grand entrance of polished marble and natural stone. Early on, seaside trips were only for the rich elite, but with the arrival of the steam engine, a visit to the shore became a possibility for many, and numerous guests celebrated the breezy splendor, pristine solitude, and unparalleled ambience of the resort. Even during the second World War, the hotel was fully occupied and operated by the Germans for the confinement of military officers.

Thoughtful renovations and careful restorations continued over the years until January 25, 1990, when a large part of the hotel was by destroyed by fire. Beloved by generations of distinguished guests, the Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin was rebuilt and expanded. Today, this grand dame of gracious hospitality is a family-owned and managed, five-star deluxe hotel with 230 guestrooms, 22 suites,4 penthouse suites, and 19 multifunctional conference rooms.

Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin, a charter member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2011, dates back to 1885.
