Grand Hotel
Location
Grand Hotel sits on Mackinac Island, accessible by an 18-minute passenger ferryboat ride from either St. Ignace or Mackinaw City, on either end of Mackinac Bridge. Once on Mackinac Island it is a short walk to Grand Hotel, or taxi service is available in the form of horse and carriage for a nominal fee. Taxis greet all ferryboats that arrive to Mackinac Island. During your stay at Grand Hotel bicycle rental and horseback riding are available. The nearest airport in Pellston, Michigan, is 12 miles south of the ferry pick-up. Airport shuttles are also possible via the island’s small runway.
The hotel can organize a number of activities on Mackinac Island. Arrange a visit to the scene of a famous battle of the War of Independence where rebel forces met the British in 1780. Plan tours of the Astor Fur Post, the Biddle House and climb the bluffs to inspect the ramparts and blockhouses at Fort Mackinac. The Indian Dormitory and the many beautifully restored Victorian homes on the island also should not be missed. For an especially delightful afternoon, browse the colorful shops of the village and sample the world-famous fudge. And in the spring, the lilacs brought over by the French in the 17th century are abloom everywhere you turn, offering a very colorful, fragrant show.
