    Grandhotel Giessbach
 in Brienz

Grandhotel Giessbach features a history doused in splendor and significance. From its humble beginnings in 1822, to its growth to one of Switzerland’s most revered hotels, guests can enjoy timeless luxury amid the tranquil background of Lake Brienz.

1822 – A structure was constructed as a shelter in the Swiss countryside.

1832 – The shelter was converted into the Giessbach Inn and officially opened its doors to its guests.

1855 – A new owner, Konrad Gerhard von Rappard, took hold of the property and created it as the hotel Pension Giessbach with 60 beds.

1858 – The hotel Pension Giessbach was sold to a steamboat company owned by the wealthy Knechthofer family. The hotel grew to include 175 beds and a private chalet.

1870 – The hotel was purchased by the Hauser family for 900,000 Swiss Francs, who commissioned Horace Edouard Davinet to convert the modest structure into an opulent five-story luxury hotel.

1883 – The Pension Giessbach became ravaged by an intense fire, and was rebuilt with a new design and incomparable luxury touches. A smaller hotel, the Beau Site, was also constructed, with 16 rooms to its name.

1885 – The hotel’s first wellness center—which included bath treatments, massages, gymnastics, and more—opened its doors.

1914 – As World War I began, the hotel became a prominent meeting spot for visitors from high-society. Artists, poets, kings, and diplomats alike enjoyed the fine scenic views offered at Grandhotel Giessbach.

1949 – After a rapid interchange of owners, Fritz Frey-Fürst purchased the hotel for 190,000 Swiss Francs in 1947. Just two years later, the hotel opened after a total renovation of its features.

1950 – A conservation order is placed on the province of Giessbach to protect its rich scenic treasures.

1953 – Frey-Fürst and Erwin Frey operated the hotel as a joint venture, and during this same year, a new chalet was built and electricity was installed throughout the entire building.

1983 – Just five years prior, the Grandhotel Giessbach is threatened with closure and complete demolition to make way for a new structure. A group banded together to save the structure just a year later, and notable ecologist Franz Weber was able to save the heralded property. Adamant that the hotel was a gift to Swiss citizens and must be saved from demolition, Weber put the hotel under protective orders from his organizations Helvetia Nostra and the Giessbach for the Swiss People Foundation.

1984 – The hotel opened with a new restaurant, the Park Restaurant, and more rooms. Renovations took place over seven distinct periods in the winter season, and the hotel was restored to its original, exquisite glory.

After three decades since its major renovations, the elegant hotel continues to boast timeless accommodations for its numerous visitors season after season, as renovations do not forget the original essence of the marvelous Grandhotel Giessbach.
