Grandhotel Pupp

Grandhotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary

Overview

The Grandhotel Pupp is a 228-room luxury hotel steeped in rich history and classical elegance. Built in 1701 as a fashionable playground for aristocracy, this Czech Republic hotel is a stunning example of timeless grandeur and exceptional service in the heart of Karlovy Vary, famous for its curative hot springs.

As early as 1370, Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor gave city privileges to the place that subsequently was named for him after he acclaimed the healing powers of the hot springs. Due to publications by doctors who touted the medicinal qualities of the water, the city developed into a famous spa resort. Railway lines were built, and the number of guests increased from 134 families in 1756, up to 71,000 guests annually in 1911.

The hotel began as the magnificent Saxony Hall, built in 1701 by Lord Mayor Deiml. Shortly thereafter, another Lord Mayor named Becher built Bohemia Hall, directly adjacent to Saxony Hall. In 1760, Johann Georg Pupp, a confectioner, moved to the area, prospered, and purchased Bohemia Hall. In 1890, Pupp’s industrious family descendants purchased Saxony Hall. Between 1896 and 1907, Viennese architects rebuilt the various family-owned buildings into the neo-Baroque style that stands today.

Up until the second World War, the family continued to acquire neighboring properties and incorporated them into the hotel complex. After the war, the communist government of Czechoslovakia nationalized the hotel, and it was renamed Grandhotel Moscow in 1950. The hotel’s original name was restored in 1989, following privatization and a complete luxurious renovation.

Over the years, the Grandhotel Pupp hotel has played the distinguished host to the likes of Beethoven, Mozart, Kafka, and Freud. More recently, it was featured in Last Holiday starring Queen Latifah and Casino Royal with Daniel Craig.

Grandhotel Pupp, a charter member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2011, dates back to 1701.
