  • Just as great as expected!

    by Morten à on 2018-02-23 03:09 am

We went for 4 days without our two young kids. To see Berlins sights, sleep till late, dine even later and overall enjoy some first class pampering. Luckily - Adlon proved the perfect place for all of the above.

Check in was effecient and helpfull with no que and our room being ready before time. Our Deluxe room was big, beautifull and 100% clean - and housekeeping kept it so without being seen or heard. Breakfast was lavish and had everything anyone could want. Roomservice was fast, the food perfectly cooked and reasonably priced. The hotel is beautifull and well kept in every way and the location is unbeatable. Right next to Brandenburger Tor, within 15 minutes walking distance to all major sights and in a both beautifull and secure neighbourhood.

Finally - the 5 stars really belong to the staff. Anyone can install marble, mahogny and brass everywhere, but what makes you feel like and esteemed and valued guest are the people working there. Staff were everywhere and always balanced on the fine line for the perfect behaviour! Attentive but not intrusive, effective without seeming hurried, proffesional but not snobbish and finally smiling and looking like they were actually enjoying themselves with tasks, each other and the guests.

Thanks to the entire team at the Adlon. We will visit again for sure!

  • Cracking hotel

    by Karen W on 2018-02-18 11:52 am

What a fantastic hotel - beautifully presented and lovely rooms, very luxurious and a great location right next to the Brandenburg Gate - the breakfasts were amazing and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend and will be staying in other Kempinski's when I get the chance!

  • I would love to give 5 stars . . .

by Henryws on 2018-02-18 10:34 am

    But I cannot.

Let me start by saying that I try to review a hotel against the standards which it sets for itself. For the Berlin Adlon Kempinski, that is 5 stars, and the "best" hotel in the city. Against that standard, I found the hotel wanting, regrettably. I stayed for 5 nights and I believe formed a reasonable impression of the hotel

First, the physical property. I stayed in a deluxe room, which was said to be about 400 square feet, and while I did not measure it, it appeared smaller than that to me, but still, it was of a good size. There were, though, a number of issues with the room:

    1. The room was in need of refurbishing or upgrading, which should not be the case at this level. Furniture was covered in nicks and bumps, the hardwood portion of the floor was badly scarred, the arms of the armchairs were worn out, and the room generally gave an air of having seen better days. See the pictures below. There was also a outline of a handprint on the wall above the toilet. For those women who are wondering what that might be about, I refer you to the men in your life, who can explain.

    2. There was a smell of sewer gas coming from one drain or another in the bathroom, which was quite bad. I was at first unsure what the cause might be, but every time we came back from having been out, the smell was very strong. An open window solved the problem, but there can be no doubt that the maid must have noticed the same smell, yet nothing was done.

    3. The stopper on one of the bathroom sinks was broken, so the sink would not drain until it was pried up with one's fingers. In this case I know the maid was aware of the problem because the stopper was always out at an angle after it had been cleaned. But it was never fixed.

Next, the staff. Overall, I found the staff to be very impressive. All seemed to speak English very well, and were very helpful. In particular, the staff who checked me in, and the concierge, were very helpful. Staff at breakfast were again very helpful and seemed well-trained. No complaints here; all lived up to the five star standard.

That is, except for the doormen. When I arrived at about 10 pm, a taxi dropped me off. The taxi driver got my bags from his trunk, and I went towards the hotel. When I got to the front door, a doorman asked if I needed help. He had watched me walk from the taxi to the door, and had not moved an inch. I dealt with my bags myself.

Throughout my stay, my son and I were surprised that the doormen very rarely acknowledged us as we went in and out. Often, during the day when there were two, they were chatting with each other, and seemed to make an effort to not even look at us as we entered or left. This became so annoying that my son began to give them a cheerful "hello" as we walked by, which actually seemed to startle them. He was going to walk up to one and shake his hand as we entered, to see if he was really alive. This was very strange behaviour on the part of the first people one meets when entering a hotel.

Breakfast was included in our rate, and it was generally very good, providing an excellent selection. Unfortunately as a result of the Berlin Film Festival the breakfast room was moved to the main floor, which was quite adequate, but after the first floor, paled somewhat.

You may ask why I made no complaint about these issues while I was there. My son certainly asked that! There is one reason. Guests in a hotel at this level should not have to complain, since there should be nothing to complain about.

To end on a high note, I do not think there is a better location in Berlin for a hotel. The Adlon is 100 meters from the Brandenburg Gate, surrounded by embassies and government offices, less than 300 hundred meters from the Reichstag, and next to the Tiergarten, which is wonderful in winter (it must be spectacular in summer). The location is enough to ensure my return, but it should be the hotel that does that.

  • The Very Heart of the City

    by Mike K on 2018-02-17 05:01 am

This is a beautiful hotel with excellent staff providing outstanding service with style.
The rooms are excellent, the food a delight and you couldn't be more central if you tried.
My photo shows the view from our breakfast table, no really. The Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag and other places of interest are within walking distance.

  • Perfect spot for Berlin

    by Dennis S on 2018-02-16 011:56 pm

Spent 2 nights at the Adlon. This has to be the best location and hotel in Berlin. Breakfast overlooking the Brandenberg gate, great room and very helpful staff. A very high end 5 star experience. This is what you expect from a 5 star hotel.
