History

The NH Collection Madrid Palacio de Tepa is set in an elegant, neoclassical 19th century palace designed by the royal architect of the time, Juan de Villanueva. Villanueva also designed the famous Plaza Mayor and the Palace, where Prado Museum is currently located.

Originally built for the Earl of Tepa, the last Viceroy of Spain in Mexico, there are also remains of the canal system constructed for the city in the 1500s located beneath the hotel. These remnants of the original Castellana water supply system are preserved beneath a glass casing in the reading room on the ground floor. The hotel’s extensive restorations included meticulously preserving its brick façade and original cast iron columns. Genuine 16th century artifacts are displayed behind glass panels at the reception desk. The Palacio de los Condes de Tepa also occupies the site of the former Fonda de San Sebastián, the habitual meeting place for one of the most lively 18th century literary gatherings, with Nicolás Fernández de Moratín, Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, José Cadalso, and Iriarte as regular members.

The hotel is located in the “Barrio de Las Letras” neighborhood, the historic literary scene of Madrid. Just a short stroll away, visitors will find some of Spain’s most famous monuments such as the Plaza Mayor, Royal Palace, Puerta del Sol, and the Madrid de los Austrias, considered the Royal neighborhood.

NH Collection Madrid Palacio de Tepa, a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2017, dates back to the 1808.
