Omni La Costa Resort & Spa
 in Carlsbad

Late 1880s – Pioneer settler, John Frazier discovered an underground mineral stream on his property. After tests showed that the water – found 450 feet below ground – was similar in content to the mineral water at a spa in Karlsbad, Bohemia, the fledgling American community embraced the name, naming the city, Carlsbad.

1963 – The land to become Omni La Costa Resort & Spa (originally named “Rancho La Costa”) was discovered while riding equestrian trails during a summer trip to Del Mar Racetrack by developers and future owners of La Costa, Merv Adelson and Irwin Molasky (two additional owners included Moe Dalitz and Allard Roen.)

1964 – As early as June, La Costa’s golf courses were nearing completion, just as the clubhouse work was commencing. The original 72-par, 7,200 yard course – designed by renowned architect Dick Wilson – covered 215 acres and cost $1.5 million. La Costa’s course led the pack in year-round playability thanks to San Diego’s one-of-a-kind weather.

1965 – In October, the 22-acre Spa at La Costa opened and received instant acclaim as “world’s best” due to its emphasis on physical well-being. The spa boasted a 21,000 sq ft building with 50 guestrooms, two 4,000 sq ft gymnasiums, whirlpools, steam rooms, Roman Showers, Finish Saunas, Russian Baths, and more. Vogue identified the Spa as “the super spa in California.” Celebrity visitors included the Queen of Iran, Jackie Kennedy, and Richard Nixon.

Late 1960s – Boasting championship tennis, golf, spa, and more, celebrities, politicians, and athletes, including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball, Sandy Koufax, and more became regulars at “Rancho La Costa.”

1968 – Nine additional tournament tennis courts were added to original four – putting La Costa on the “tennis map.”

1969 & 1998 – PGA Tour’s Tour of Champions was held at La Costa, and the greatest names in golf played, including Sam Snead, Ray Floyd, Arnold Palmer, Bobby Nichols, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods.

Early 1970s – Tennis at La Costa continued to grow in size and stature, attracting (over the years) players including: Jimmy Connors, Ilie Nastase, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Rod Laver, and Bobby Riggs. Female players included: Gillie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Monica Seles, Chris Evert, Maria Sharipova, and Venus and Serena Williams.

1973 – Nine additional holes of golf were added (for a total of 27.)

1985 – Added nine more holes of golf – total of 36 holes were divided into two 18-hole courses.

Omni La Costa Resort, a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2014, dates back to 1965.
