History

After $6 million and a year of construction, The William Penn Hotel opened to great fanfare in March of 1916, claiming its place as the grandest hotel in the nation.

Throughout its storied past and many owners, The Omni William Penn Hotel has played host to many of the twentieth century’s best and brightest—innovators, musicians, and more. A young bandleader named Lawrence Welk, who would later gain fame for his eponymous television show, performed in the hotel’s various ballrooms. The William Penn’s engineers even produced Welk’s iconic bubble machine.

In 1934, a young vocalist named Dolores DeFina, who had previously performed at the famed hotel, would accept a marriage proposal at The William Penn from the inimitable Bob Hope.

A popular campaign spot as well as a presidential must-see, The Omni William Penn Hotel has received every seated president since Theodore Roosevelt.

Omni William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh, a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2014, dates back to 1916.
