I stayed here for two night for a work conference. The hotel was beautiful. Check in was a breeze. Everything for the conference was set up wonderfully. I had a beautiful view from my room. I also had access to the breakfast which was decent. We checked in before our room were ready so we were able to leave our luggage with the bellman and they sent me a text when my room was ready (so convenient). The location of the hotel was in a perfect spot. Walking distance from many wonderful sights and restaurants. I couldn't be happier with my stay.

I really liked this hotel. It's a beautiful historic hotel. The lobby bar is amazing and if you don't stay at this hotel, still worth stopping by for a drink. It is close to theater district, Art Institute and lakefront. So much is walkable or a quick Uber ride for this hotel. Located a couple blocks from the Blue and Orange lines, so no need to rent a car if you're flying in and who wants to deal with Chicago traffic!

  • A little under expectations, but they made it up. p.s. Know what festivals are going on before you book!

We stayed at Palmer House so we could have a central location to downtown Chicago, namely for amenities, food and entertainment. Unbeknownst to us, our stay overlapped with the entire Lollapalooza music festival. This is not the hotel's fault obviously, but it did provide us some lessons that we will share nonetheless. The reason for the 3 rating is that for the price, the hotel did not deliver on our expectations.

Namely, the rooms were dirty and musty, and the beds were probably the hardest we've ever slept on in a hotel. After three nights, it was hard to get up and walk around in the mornings. Being extremely close to Grant Park, the hotel was ground zero for festival-goers which created an interesting environment within the hotel, and long nights of booze and drug filled teens laughing or crying all night in the hallways. We also understand that as a historic hotel, there isn't the same opportunities to sound-proof rooms, and other than hearing the faint chatter, it didn't impact our sleep as much as the hard mattresses. Also, we learned that the City had an agreement with the ride share companies and pedicabs that they couldn't to any pick up or drop offs in a certain, "zone," during Lolla, which meant we had to walk 6 or so blocks to get picked up for a ride if we wanted to go somewhere out of walking distance.

On the positive side, the hotel is in a great location, exactly what we wanted. It was a short walk to Grant and Millennium Parks, the Riverwalk, and a plethora of great restaurants and bars. The historic aspect of the hotel was really cool as well, including a small museum with the hotel's history. Also, after making management aware of some of the issues above, they provided us with a refund for one of the nights, which we appreciated and helped bump this review from a 2 to a 3. The service of employees at the hotel was great.

Ultimately, the hotel should invest a little more into the rooms to justify the price, but it's a cool place. Make sure to do a little research on what events might be going on in downtown Chicago, in case it may impact the crowds at your hotel and/or mobility around it.

    Cheers!

  • Lovely Hotel!

This was a beautiful, historic hotel and the staff were all very helpful and polite. The location couldn't be more perfect and convenient to many top tourist destinations. As a Hilton Gold member, I received free breakfast and it was far from the best I have had in other hotels but, the evening snacks were very good. I will most definitely stay here the next time I visit Chicago!

  • A Place in History

The Palmer Hotel holds a very signifiant spot in Chicago history, and even possibly hospitality history. The majestical lobby immediately transports visitors back to the 20s. From the gothic and rustic elevators to the dimly lit hanging chandelier. Such royalty and elegance reminds one of the 20s centric celebrity Coco Chanel.

A hotel of this standard may make for great picturesque moments but the hotel does have its drawbacks. The bathrooms are small, the carpet seems worn and the in-room decor could use a slight touch up. It seems that the 20s atmosphere that the hotel maintains seems to be dated itself. Compared to the other historical monuments in the city such as the Chicago Hilton has a balanced blend of the hotels' historical roots but added some modern touches. The staff, seemingly overwhelmed and understaffed to assist quickly on room requests such as extra towels due to the 500+ rooms of the hotel. The staff was very pleasant and cordial. Now, there is no need to blabber about usb ports, and such since the hotel is not trying to sell that aspect of travel but more of an opportunity to sleep in a piece of history.

With that being said, The Palmer didn't break our trip. The breakfast was wonderful, and the location of the Palmer makes it easily accessible to the many of Chicago's attractions. It made Chicago very easy to wander and explore!

If one chooses to stay here, one must understand what they are to expect. This isn't a hotel for those wanting grapes fed hand-in-hand with leaves fanning behind them while their Iphone charges. This hotel is for a simple visit yet an experience that takes you back to the 20s, respectably. It's more of an experience hotel to at least try once and then onto the next. My family enjoyed the 3 day stay at the Palmer, and all of Chicago!
