  • MUCH MORE THAN ITS HISTORY

    by Meander20468600956 on 2019-01-16 10:48 am

Stay as long as possible here to soak up the ambiance. Switch off your mobile phone to appreciate what and who is about? I holidayed here 15th to 27th Dec. 2018, and previously. Each day was an event and a pleasure starting with a sumptuous ,wide - selection, delicious buffet breakfast with the most attentive and conscientious staff about. Had the best eggs Benedict of 2018 here. The service and food in La Terrace was always equally inviting and of the highest standard. So, too, were beverages and I enjoyed the best Mar. cocktails of 2018 here. I could not get my Prestige Suite 1204 ( - one night stays block the booking system) but # 3403 in the New Wing was an awful lot to enjoy with, surely, the finest of Nile views. The hotel was safe and spotlessly clean, as was my space. The gardens, walkways and poolside so well attended to and afternoon tea was an ''event'' - as it should be. All staff members and in - house units were wide - awake and dynamic and beyond helpful. Guest relations terribly enthusiastic and always helpful - not that I encountered anything to complain about or badger. The General Manager is much needed outside Egypt where, too often, now even Leading Hotels of The World standards are slipping and becoming too ''automated''. Each day I observed Mr Ahmed Sh.( the G.M.) visit and inspect with his team the various units as he always greeted the resident guests most courteously and reassuringly. Indeed, I was sorry I had not an issue, ever, during my stay to badger him on. As a global traveler and relishing fine hotel sojourns, The Cataract, Aswan, Old or New, has been a hugely enjoyable, relaxing, anxiety - free and flawless refuge for me and one I readily recommend without hesitation or reservation( - but do book!). It retains the highest standards of ''Hotel'' which are too rapidly been lost in too many of the other major hotel brands. This hotel, with its staff members, is truly a gift on The Nile and one which hugely embellishes any trip to Egypt so comprehensively and more memorably.

  • Attitude towards disabled travlers

    by 270grahamg on 2019-01-13 06:19 am

I am disabled, both legs weak. I have traveled widely, but never before have I found in any hotel, such an appalling treatment of a disabled person. Because of my weak legs I always make sure, and if using an agent make sure that they understand, the need for a walk in shower.
When checking in to the Old Cataract Hotel the first thing that I checked was the bathroom. No walk in shower, but a hand held shower over the bath. I immediately pointed out that for me this was dangerous as the bottom of the bath was u shaped and slippery and therefore I was likely to fall over both because of weak legs and my sense of balance is poor. When i fall I tend to break bones. It was then suggested that I should have baths. I had to point out that because of my weak legs I could not get into or out of the bath. It was then suggested that a chair could be put in he bath. Again I had to point out that that would be unstable, and that I have difficulty in getting up from chairs. Then it was suggested that perhaps I did not need to wash while staying in the hotel. I could not believe what I heard. They repeated it with the equivalent of a shrug of the shoulders, implying nothing more could be done. All this took place at Reception, and in public, and was very embarrassing. I went back every day to try and resolve the problem, and I know the agents tried to as well. A friend travelling with me had to shower me, but it was highly dangerous as there was nothing to hold onto, and highly embarrassing. I raised these problems again when checking out and was told someone would find the manager. He could not be found, and so I was asked to leave my card and he would be in contact with me. Not surprisingly he has not.

In most western countries this attitude towards the disabled, a total lack of interest in helping them, would probably be deemed illegal. This was the first time that I had stayed in a Sofitel hotel, and will never do so again, and I would urge others to boycott the chain as well because of their attitude towards the disabled. In my lectures I now use this experience as a prime example of how not to treat the disabled.

This is the only hotel anywhere in the world that I have stayed that has this attitude. All other hotels have been accommodating and helpful to any problems that I have had. The attitude of the staff of this hotel is a disgrace.

    Owner Response
    Dear Valued guest.
At the very beginning we would like to express our sincere apology for the inconvenience which distorted the full enjoyment by your stay at out hotel.
Dear 270grahamg, as we truly appreciate your feedback on our hotel concerning the inconvenient handling of your physical challenge case request, we truly consider your posted feedback a real opportunity to communicate and correct the misunderstanding that occurred during your stay with us. We might know how disappointed you were. However, there are some facts to be clarified: Firstly, our hotel does have special rooms for any guest with any physical challenge, even the minor challenges. Secondly, the hotel management has not received any special request on your behalf whether from your good self directly, or from your company. Thirdly, the hotel during your stay was fully occupied due to the New Year's Eve festivities. Moreover, our ambassadors have offered some solutions, but all the suggested solutions have been rejected by your good self.
As we are trying to unveil the facts concerning your valued feedback, we would like to share these facts with our good self: Our hotel as a part of an international company has participated in the International Day of people with Disabilities December 3rd, 2018. The theme of past year was providing care for people with Invisible Disabilities. In other words, not only our hotel, but also all the sister hotels do provide the highest level of care for all forms of disabilities, even if they were invisible. We have at least one special needs guest every month, and we do have authentic photos for some of them who insisted to document our support to them. However, for respecting the privacy of our guests we cannot share any of these photos which document how we really act in such cases.
At the end, once again we owe your good self a sincere apology. Meanwhile, we are looking forward to the near future to welcoming your good self again in our hotel.
    Best Regards

  • Lovely hotel and enjoyable winter stay in the sun of Aswan

by MarlineKhalil on 2019-01-11 09:04 am

We stayed in a suite at the old building overlooking the gardens as we were out most of the day on the Terrace or on the Nile..where there are lovely places to sit and read or grab your coffee and have a bite. You need to eat at least once at the legendary restaurant 1902 which we had to book when we checked in. French cuisine! superb...Ask for a tour of the hotel and if it was available, get to see Churchill suite which is just unique. There is a small desk and a rocking chair of Agatha Christie where she wrote her famous 'death on the Nile"-Take a felucca on the Nile for an hour or so, better during the daylight to be able to get good pictures..and don't forget to visit their spa...as well...a wonderful experience all together..

  • A super class in hotel in extraordinary surroundings

    by Gabriele M on 2019-01-11 01:08 am

The old palace building is very carefully preserved in its historical glory. The new buiding is tasteful and the suites are generous and very comfortable with amazing views. Beautiful bathroom. The Spa is very pleasant, though a little too dark.I found the famous 1902 restaurant a bit disappointing, especially as I was served a small grilled beef steak instead of the announced elabrate veal. When I enquired they insisted it was veal!I found the check in process a bit slow.

  • Wonderful

    by 956gillianp on 2019-01-10 07:40 pm

This hotel is just lovely. The views from my Nile wing room were spectacular. The room itself is huge, with a living area, 2 TVs and a massive bathroom. Bed was super comfy and makes me want to buy one! The reception were excellent as were the bar men and waiters. This is my second or third visit here and I want to keep coming back!
