History

Built in 1886 by British explorers, Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor is situated on the Nile River amid luxuriant tropical gardens and ancient temples, blending rich colonial design with the glory of Pharaonic times. This opulent palace was the privileged host of royal families from Europe and the East and remains the choice destination for prestigious guests.

During World War I, the hotel was temporarily closed to guests and was converted to accommodate convalescing soldiers.

A regular guest at the hotel from 1907 on was George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, better known simply as Lord Carnarvon. Carnarvon was the patron of Carter, who announced the discovery the tomb of King Tutankhamen from the steps of the entrance to the Winter Palace in 1922. After the discovery, the Winter Palace played host to the international press corps and foreign visitors there to follow the story. Carter used the hotel's noticeboard to deliver occasional news and information on the discovery.

Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor, a charter member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2014, dates back to 1886.
