  • No Room At This Inn

My family and I stayed here for a business / pleasure trip recently. The hotel is as far as you can possibly get from O'Hare Airport, requiring a 45 minute - 1 hour cab ride at $50 - $100 per trip. A room with a view other than the HVAC, pictured here, cost $30 extra per night. The room had large windows that rattled all night with each gust of the wind. The bed was lumpy, and the pillows offered no head support. I didn't sleep more than 5 hours a night all week.

I understand that that this is an historic hotel, but the radiator heat makes it hard to achieve a comfortable temperature. There's a separate tub and shower, but the shower has no light inside of it. With a three foot soffit over the shower, the light from the bathroom ceiling doesn't penetrate the shower door. It's like bathing in a cave. The water flow in the shower is a threaded handle that requires multiple turns to toggle between hot and cold. Predictably, there are two temperatures, fire and ice.

The TV sits at a 90 degree angle to the bed, and since the pillows are of such poor quality, there's no way to watch in bed. There is no fridge, and the rooms are small. The hair dryer in the room was broken. There was a quarter inch of dust on the return vent in the room. Since I was up at 5 AM every day, I asked the front desk for a newspaper to read. The response I got was, "Those will be available at 7 AM, and you can purchase that in the gift shop."

I've contracted conference service with hotels over the years, and I realize that every food and beverage item is a la carte, but the Hotel wouldn't provide tables, pads, or pens for the attendees. We had to perform laptop and tablet operations on our laps. In 25 years as a working professional, I have never attended a conference that wouldn't provide a writing or work surface.

This place has a very high opinion of itself, and for no good reason. As a a Hilton property, I expected, and paid for, much more.

  • Dissapointing

Have stayed here several times over the years & this time was a real disappointment. To begin, due to an ongoing city construction project getting in & out of the hotel is a real problem if you are valet parking. They just don't seem to have a viable solution given all the traffic. In fairness, this is not the Drakes choice however they don't seem to have a solution , or staff, to handle it . WIth cold weather, wind, traffic its just not the kind of place I want to be waiting around on. Again, the city is in control of the construction. A thought I traveled a bit & understood the "ropes" however we waited almost a hour for our luggage to be brought up. Typically not a big deal however we were in a hurry to make a dinner reservation. I called & they said would bring up-what was publicizing is they said they had left me a message about bringing luggage up- I said I wasn't aware however sure enough there was a message on my rooms phone. Apparently they had called in between me getting out of car, checking in at desk & riding elevator to my room (maybe 10 minutes) They state they can not bring luggage into room without anyone being in room. I was never aware of that rule. They did not advise me at valet, bellguy didn't state it, when I checked in & actually handed my luggage tag to front desk they did not advise me either- I just assumed, as every other hotel I have ever checked into, the luggage would be brought to room. AGain, there position was "they called" - I guess I didn't know the rule & certainly didn't think about having to check my phone in room immediately upon entering. Where the hecK did they think I was going upon checkin? Oh well, I guess I just don't understand the rules. The staff they have is certainly pleasant, it just seems they need more. SO, getting into hotel is the city's fault, not getting my luggage timely is my fault. The room was nice.

  • Great facility, with exceptional caring staff.

I really appreciate the genuine caring the staff has for its guests. The hotel was well-decorated for the holidays. I was here for a conference and the conference food was very good. I definitely would stay here again.

  • Lovely Hotel in a Great Location

This property is lovely, but be prepared to pay for it! We stayed one night and parked our vehicle for 24 hours and our bill (no add-ons) was $445.
The bed was comfortable and the room very clean. The windows were dirty, which proves we were in a city.

  • Lovely hotel, great location, wonderful service

I recently stayed at the Drake Hotel while attending a conference there. While the guest rooms are small, as this is an historic hotel, they are nicely appointed and contain modern amenities. The well lit, wide hallways on the guest room levels brought for me a sense of security and elegance. Some of the meeting rooms are a bit oddly shaped, again, because of the historic nature of the hotel, and required some creative thinking on the part of our meeting planners, and this did not detract from the positive outcomes of the meeting. Christmas decorations went up while we were there (first week in November), and they are beautiful. Anyone heading to Chicago for a holiday shopping trip would love the immediate access to Michigan Avenue. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful. I would highly consider returning to the Drake.
