The Grand Hotel & Spa is housed in the historic former North East Railway Headquarters, close to the storied York Minster and National Railway Museum. But there is so much more to the area to explore, experience, and help create memories that will last a lifetime.

York Minster
Stop by one of the largest Catholic cathedrals of its kind, built in Gothic style, York Minster is also known as The Cathedral and Metropolitan Church of Saint Peter in York. The 128 stained glass windows were built with over 2 million pieces of glass. This masterpiece was once the center of the Roman Empire and a sight not to miss in Yorkshire. Book a free guided tour to take a look through the chambers beneath the church.

Jorvik Centre
After being founded by the Romans, York was taken over by the Vikings. This annual Viking Festival is celebrated city-wide and considered the largest Viking festival in all of Europe. Venture out to see life-sized dioramas illustrating Viking life in York, living history encampments and dramatic combat performances as Vikings worldwide descend on York for this lively week. Be sure to make a reservation.

National Railway Museum
Opened in 1975 to preserve the history of the railway system, the National Railway Museum has historic carriages that take visitors back in time to enjoy a traditional English Afternoon Tea, while children can explore the outdoor play area with its own miniature railway and science shows. View the National collection, which includes over 300 locomotives, steam and diesel engines, railway uniforms, and artwork. The museum even includes a collection of Royal carriages and Royal trains used from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II, as well as exhibits on legends like Mallard, the world’s fastest steam locomotive.
