The Queen Mary
Rich in history, The Queen Mary® is renowned as the grandest ocean liner ever built since her maiden voyage in 1936. These early years distinguished the majestic steamship as the only civilized way to travel for high society’s elite, and instantly drew the attention of celebrities like Fred Astaire, political figures like Winston Churchill and Ronald Reagan, and dignitaries such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
Commissioned by the Cunard Steamship Company, The Queen Mary’s maiden voyage was on May 27, 1936. With 12 decks and capacity for 1,174 passengers, the ship was the most stylish and luxurious of its class with its richly decorated Art Deco salons showcasing magnificent original paintings, murals, brass and nickel-silver fixtures, and etched leaded glass accents. In 1939, glamour was exchanged for glory with the onset of the Second World War, and The Queen Mary was drafted into service for the Allied troops, carrying a total of 765,429 military personnel and up to 15,000 troops at one time. On July 31, 1947, The Queen Mary resumed peacetime passenger service, once again gracefully transporting distinguished guests and illuminaries.
Today, docked in Long Beach, California, in a permanent home, The Queen Mary offers guests a unique journey back in time with a blend of transatlantic steamship history, 314 elegantly appointed staterooms, and one-of-a-kind experiences. The Queen Mary’s careful restoration is an authentic reminder of a bygone era, giving guests a distinctive sense of place. An iconic landmark, The Queen Mary is a cultural destination in itself, and guests experience interactive tours, specialty dining events, year-round festivals, and live entertainment featuring the timeless history and mystery of this legendary ship.
In 1939, the start of World War II, The Queen Mary was drafted into service. Deemed the “Grey Ghost” due to her camouflaged grey exterior, she joined the Allied Forces.
