Overview
In 1927, Louis Sherry looked beyond his renowned ice cream and confections empire to the corner of New York’s Fifth Avenue and 59thStreet. Here, Sherry built his magnificent hotel, The Sherry-Netherland.At 560-feet and 38 stories, it was the world's tallest apartment hotel, and with an attentive staff, the hotel beckoned the affluent New Yorker to enjoy a “way of living” more than simply “a place to live.” Today, the hotel exudes elegance in its neo-Romanesque and Renaissance architecture,travertine marble base, and elaborate Gothic minaret. Modeled after the Vatican library, the lobby boasts a vaulted ceiling, gilded detailing,and crystal chandeliers. Its whimsical griffins are said to guard valuable treasure, which guests find in abundance at The Sherry.
The classical friezes that adorn the lobby were salvaged from the mansion of shipping and railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt.
