  • Lovely location, but luxury prices for non-luxury stay and mass disorganization

    by TamB760 on 2020-02-23 02:07 pm

We went to the Chateau Montebello this weekend and had mixed reviews. It is situated in an absolutely gorgeous location and we had perfect weather so that was a big selling point. The food was good and a hit with the two teen boys, especially the Sunday morning buffet. It was quite good but you can only eat so much and a lot of it was basic buffet fare we could have gotten elsewhere for one quarter of the price. The bill also suggested we give a 15% tip, for clearing our dishes? The servers didn't even serve our coffee as a carafe was at our table. I actually prefer the carafe though. There was also a lot of confusion between wait staff as there appeared to be several people serving our table resulting in it taking half an hour to get a cup of tea and another half hour to get our bill and longer still even to pay it. The rooms are pretty basic and the whole place needs a redo and is run down, so again I would say that you are paying luxury prices for basic accommodations. They charge a resort fee so they can't say the prices are because of amenities. Besides you pay extra for all the extra activities so I can't quite figure out what the resort fee was for? Nothing is free there. On the good side, there is so much to do and and lots of fun to be had ....if you can figure it out. Best to prepare ahead and do some research online prior to going and print a map out for yourself because they won't give you one. First of all, you can't get a map of the complex from the hotel and it is quite large. Ridiculous. We spent all day trying to find out where things were and half the staff don't even know. There's a map at the concierge, 1 map, but I don't have a photographic memory. Also no one even told us there was a concierge, or that we had to buy tickets ahead for some activities or where to get them, and the lady at the gift shop told us the sleigh rides have nothing to do with the hotel and you can't buy tickets there and there was confusion over where the snow taffy exactly was, we were told to go outside when it was inside, etc.... you get the drift. And there are sleigh rides there. The dog sled ride staff also seem to be going slowly and chit chatting whatever despite the lineups of people and there was a sign up saying that they were full for the day although we were told this was not necessarily so....more confusion. Needless to say we got a lot of exercise running around this large complex trying to find things, get tickets, etc. So our final opinion of this place is, that we ended up enjoy our vacation despite all the frustration, the location is stunning, the activities are fun if you can manage getting the tickets and finding them, but the prices were unjustifiably high, this is definitely only basic accommodations and good but not high end food, but worse of all was the absolute disorganization of the whole place. We spent a lot of our time running around trying to find things and a lot of the staff was clueless. It seems like this would be simple to fix. Put some signs with directions up outside, arrows, etc. Give guests a map or put maps out on the grounds, signs on buildings, etc. Make sure your staff is well informed. Put up signs telling people to buy tickets for activities BEFORE they head out and where to purchase them and put these in English and French. In the dining room, get your act together! Maybe one server only and keep an eye on tables. Considering you are just clearing dishes and filling water glasses, not taking orders and delivering food, you shouldn't have a hard time managing to keep an eye on tables. We had to ask three people to let us pay before someone finally returned with a pay machine....where did the other two go? And either the food prices should come down or the quality go up considerably. Same with the rooms, either make them into luxury rooms or cut the price drastically. Spa prices are also inflated, the service was average. We will go back but won't ever pay to spend the night again, we'll skip the spa and dinner, and we will just do a day trip.

  • family lunch

we were disappointed with the brunch (flies on the cheese), the variety and quality of the food was not to their usual standard as we had been to their brunch before. The price-quality ratio was not justifiable (very pricy for the quality). Disappointed.

  • Lodge stay but luxury price

    by Christopher G on 2020-02-16 09:18 am

Stayed one night. Check-in was fine. Although touted as "renovated", the room is still sub-par compared to competition for the price paid. Bed is quite used (we sank into the middle). The walls are thin (heard the guy next door belch and fart). Food was way too pricey to eat on premises (silver lining was that it allowed us to find a couple of gems just down the street). If we were to end there, this would have been a 1 or 2 star rating at best.

But the activities outside of the main lodge help bring up the score. The recreation options are excellent... large pool, clean hot tubs, full gym*, lots of ski/walking/biking trails, skating, sliding, dog-sledding. So you pay for these inclusions. We took advantage of the extensive network of cross-country ski trails and also enjoyed the huge pool. The gym is a decent size. Problem was the machines were malfunctioning. Not one treadmill had both the machine and television working at the same time. Again, for the price ... unacceptable.

So all in all, there were some highs in the experience but the lows were too low for an almost $500 night.

  • Log Cabin in the Woods

    by Eric D on 2020-02-15 11:37 am

We stayed in this 90 year old all log wood hotel and was very impressed by the grandure of the lobby with the hexagonal fireplaces. I specify this because, its six individual fireplaces, not one big central fireplace with 6 faces. The old cabin smell and wood fire permeates the hotel. Brings back old memories. The architecture is amazing. A must see. We were very lucky and received a free upgrade to the grand suite. Which consists of 2 rooms ,one a bedroom and the other a living room/dining table with 6 chairs, 2 bathrooms. It was beautiful and huge. The King bed was very comfortable and 2 TVs, etc.
Although the rooms were perfect, it was very hard to heat. A loud fan noise was constantly being heard.
The room was newly renovated with modern marble tiled bathrooms very nice, but no heating in them. Brrr!
The Chateau conserves its old charms with paintings of Papineau, & Champlain etc.
We ate at the bistro on our first night, while watching the hockey game. Onion soup which was excellent and beef tartare that was great.
My girlfriend had trout with bok choy, the trout was perfect. The breakfast buffet was huge. You must try Duck Eggs, WOW!That's all I'm going to say.
Our meal at the Chantignole was nice, but not impressed. Not as high end as I expected.
The premises is huge, with a lot of activities to do like Land Rover Experience and dog sledding. The indoor pool is one of the largest in Canada, adjoining the spa. You can get there by a tunnel from the main hotel.
The spa was great, the massage beds are very large, and very comfortable. The therapists are great.
Everyone is so very nice and patient. A great gateway.

  • First time

by sherikristah on 2020-02-14 02:45 pm

This was our first time here and spent 2 nights. From the moment we walked through the doors we felt very welcomed. Smiles from all staff and a big Welcome to Ch?teau Montebello . Our room 424 ( old style) faced the river, very clean but an amazing view. The next morning we did the dogsledding and snowshoeing We ate at the Bistro 2 times and breakfast at the dining room departure morning. Service and food excellent. It was hard to leave and can't wait for next time. So relaxing
