Overview

Festningen Castle is a quaint vacation getaway that occupies a small portion of the Kongsvinger Fortress. Originally established in the late 1600s, this impressive stronghold served as an integral part of Norway’s national defense system for hundreds of years. It sits atop a hill that overlooks the ancient Viger Royal Road, which twists and turns through the surrounding Glomma River basin. Its significance as a major commercial highway also inspired marauding armies to constantly fight over it. Many generals found that the present site of the Kongsvinger Fortress was the perfect place to control access to the road due to its commanding views of the local countryside. As such, the spot became the location of many pitched battles. From foreign invasions to localized civil wars, warriors from across Scandinavia frequently clashed around the hilltop throughout the Middle Ages.

The Festningen Castle offers a stunning selection of rooms in a fortress building that dates back to 1771. Originally functioning as military barracks, this historic structure has been updated to include modern comfort while maintaining original elements. For example, the detailed wallpaper has been preserved. Relax in a comfortable Norwegian-made Jensen bed and enjoy the luxurious complimentary L’occitane bath amenities. Many of the rooms present gorgeous views of the Glomma river and surrounding region.

Guests at the Festningen Castle will find a serene environment surrounded by a beautiful landscape. Located near many museums and historical landmarks, this hotel provides visitors with countless opportunities to become immersed in Norway’s culture and learn about the country’s long history, including the hotel’s own on-site museum. Walk through the historic site and see original portions of the Kongsvinger Fortress.

Festningen Castle, a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2019, dates back to 1673.

Fun FactThe famed Norwegian poet, Aasmund Olavsson Vinje cited the fortress in a poem entitled, Ferdaminni fraa Sumaren 1860. In it, Vinje states that, “one of the finest views in the country is to stand at Kongsvinger Fortress and gaze down the Glomma.”
