Overview

Finse 1222 first opened as a quaint mountain lodge in 1909. Its original purpose was to provide a safe haven for those interested in exploring the rugged terrain of the surrounding countryside. Minister Kristoffer Lehmkuhl and the state-owned Railways of Norway operated the lodge upon its grand debut, intending to use it as part of a larger strategy to promote tourism throughout Norway. Their joint ownership did not last long though, as Alice Lister Fangen assumed control over the lodge several months later. She managed the location through her company, Norsek Hotelcompagnie AS, which she formed with her business partner, Joseph Klem. The two were incredibly successful. In a matter of years, both Fangen and Klem had transformed the lodge into a premier hotel. It soon boasted a massive new wing of luxurious accommodations, as well as the world’s first indoor ice skating ring.

Today, Finse 1222 continues its role as a refuge for those who wish to explore Norway. Offering 41 guestrooms and 2 suites with modern furnishings and high ceilings, it is an ideal resting place for travelers. All of the guestrooms have modest furniture and natural lighting, and some of the suites offer views of the Finse lake and Hardangerjøkulen. The kitchen at Finse 1222 utilizes high-quality, mostly local products to create memorable and satisfying meals available throughout the day.

One of the unique benefits to staying at Finse 1222 is the hotel’s location between two national parks and protected areas. This puts guests in a prime location to experience a wide variety of outdoor activities, such as skiing in the winter or hiking and cycling in the summer months.

Finse 1222, a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2019, dates back to 1909.

Fun FactThe entire Star Wars crew stayed at Finse 1222 in 1979, including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and many local extras. The setting for the ice planet “Hoth” in The Empire Strikes Back was even filmed outside the hotel. Each year an anniversary celebration called VISIT HOTH takes place at the hotel.
