  • Wonderful, authentic experience in a mystical little community

    by MontrealMargo P on 2018-10-02 09:57 am

My friend and I spent one night at the friendly and welcoming Fjaerland Hotel in late September and walked around this charming little village, stretched out along the fjord, in the rain. That atmosphere gave the area a unique homey feel, especially with the Booktown's shelves of books in every nook, including a telephone booth! And the now-closed, Gothic-styled 19th century Mundel Hotel added a mystical air to the off-season village. But it was dinner that we really loved, one of our best meals in Norway, of succulent local duck and seafood expertly prepared by a chef who prides himself on using very local ingredients. Afterwards, the relaxing lounge with it s broad daytime views can't be beat. Kayaking here would be a dream. All of this quality makes the simply furnished rooms that some people complain about, seem totally unimportant - we found them authentically country-charming. After all, the hotel was featured as one of stellar entries in the book "55 Exotic Hotels in Norway".

  • Nice stay

by DennisHagen on 2018-09-29 09:19 am

We stayed in this hotel for 1 night while making a road trip in Norway

We stayed here late september and it was raining all day long, the hotel is situated on the edge of a fjord wich is Nice the picture on the website and tripadvisor is a bit deceiving, its not the only building on the fjord and the old car is not really in front of the hotel!!

The room is small and basic bed is good but shower should be upgraded a showercurtain is not of this time any more

Very Nice is the meeting before dinner were the owner ( who is a scientist) tells story's of the history of the hotel and surroundings

After that it is dinnertime with local products and beer!!

A Night is not cheap around EUR350 incl dinner and drinks

  • Classy, historic, wonderful hotel on the fjord

    by KarenEBrown100 on 2018-09-20 06:13 am

We just loved staying here. Such a unique historic hotel, with a beautiful location right on the fjord in a quiet area. The food was also quite good - had breakfast and dinner there two days/nights. I have food allergies and they were quite nice and made me yummy meals that accommodated my food issues. We had a lovely kayak in the fjord. The only negative is that the walls are paper thin - could here the people in the next room snoring, and talking (not at the same time!). So if you are a light sleeper, it might be tough to really get a good night's sleep -- all depending on the other hotel guests. B?rd, the hotel owner, is very nice and quite interesting. He bought and reopened this hotel about 6 years ago, and I think he will be quite successful. He gives a 1/2 hour talk in the evening about the local area which is worth attending.

  • Unique and lovely stay

    by Jessica Z on 2018-09-16 06:11 am

The building from the outside in is very stylish and full of character. So many details that we noticed and appreciated.

The food and wine were the best we had on the trip. Great quality ingredients, mostly sourced locally/homemade and prepared thoughtfully.

The owner and staff were welcoming from the start.

We mostly enjoyed the common living space- having a glass of wine at night and a cup of coffee in the morning with those views!

  • A special location and well-loved hotel

by tonybogod on 2018-09-06 01:04 am

This is a delightful hotel and well loved and looked after by its owner Bard. The staff are delightful and very helpful. The reviews say it all though - it is an old building and as a result is noisy. Bard is aware and trying to improve but there is only so much that can be done. Unless you want to wake early, sleep on the top floor and hope you don't have snorers or talkers next door! The breakfast was homemade and delightful. Our one issue though was dinner. The price is, even by Norwegian standards, unacceptably high (450 NOK just for a main course, 590 for 3 courses, plus drinks of course - and a menu without choice, although I am sure they can flex). We wouldn't mind but you feel captive there - other than pizza on the camp site or a 30 minute drive, there is no other option, and if you are a family of 4, it gets ridiculously expensive. We would recommend the hotel re-considers its offering here - making it a sensible price or offering simple alternatives alongside. Thanks all, a lovely stay
