  • Best dining experiences in Ireland. Worth the trip!

by smitherwax on 2019-09-12 12:10 am

My family spent 2 magical nights at the hotel at the end of August. We were lucky to be there to experience the full range of the chefs repertoire. We arrived on a Thursday and enjoyed the "casual night" fare. Only to be blown away by breakfast the next morning. Best Eggs Benedict we have ever had. Then we enjoyed the beautiful dinner the next evening. It was rainy and cold, the fireplaces were blazing all you needed was a good book(the hotel has a great collection if you forgot yours) to have the perfect visit. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable. Unplug and enjoy!

  • Good location, well managed, excellent restaurant, poor room

    by globaltraveller200 on 2019-09-05 12:39 am

Overall, we enjoyed another return visit to Gregans Castle, for two nights, but less than before, partly because of the dreadful weather and also because of our room.

'Gregans Castle' isn't remotely like a castle. It's an elegant late 20c conversion and expansion of a nondescript 18c mansion which was associated with a nearby 13c tower house. The location is isolated and peaceful, about 5 km from the pleasant village of Ballyvaughan, and there is a garden area with excellent views of the peaceful Burren landscape.

The d?cor of the public areas is low-key luxury in a 19c style. Lighting is poor - we found it next to impossible to read in these rooms except close to a window. Apart from a croquet lawn, the hotel doesn't have leisure facilities and instead offers peaceful 'do nothing' relaxation. And it's also a good base for exploring north and west Clare.

Room size varies. Our 'classic' first floor room (c. 25 steps, no elevator) was 'compact' and offered poor lighting, small low windows, a small double bed and no horizontal clothes storage. The bathroom was also small but well equipped, with a shower over a full size bath. Our previous experiences were of 'superior' rooms, which are better.

The meal offerings are excellent. The dinner menu is imaginative and well-executed, with friendly professional service and an excellent wine list. Breakfast is an extensive cold buffet supplemented by an eclectic hot food menu cooked to order and of a very high standard.

WiFi is free and simple to use. All the staff we met were friendly and efficient.

Overall, we would rate Gregans as an expensive 'country house' four star. It's undoubtedly the best hotel in north Clare but there's room for improvement.

  • Highlight of Our Irish Vacation

    by M6007AKryans on 2019-09-03 02:12 pm

This place was an absolute gem! We had been driving around the island and came to this place on our itinerary after a long drive from Dingle in the rain. It is absolutely perfect if you are looking to wind down and enjoy The Burren. Our dining experience here was absolutely outstanding and was the best food we had in Ireland. The rooms are good size and very comfortable. Thanks to Olivia for the warm welcome! I hope to be back someday. I cannot say enough good things about this place.

  • Phenomenal place to escape to...

Country style manor/home. Excellent rooms, great little pub on-site and the restaurant was 5 Star. Olivia was a fantastic host and really made us feel special. The grounds/estate have breath taking view of Galway Bay as well as The Burren! Will return to this fantastic place.

  • Top of the Charts

The location is wonderful -- expensive views across the hotel grounds. The gardens are thoughtfully designed and beautiful. The hotel itself is most attractive and comfortable, including the common rooms. This is a good spot as a base for exploring the Burren and thence to the Cliffs of Moher.

The food is marvelous. The views from the dining room are gorgeous -- every night and morning we had a different table with a different view. The multi-course dinner menu was outstanding, and came with a number of extra courses -- amuse bouche -- in an appropriately leisurely pace. The wine list had unusual offerings along with the usual, and our selection was aided immensely by the staff. The bar knows how to make a great martini with Irish gin, as well as how to serve top level Irish whiskey.

Breakfasts were outrageously good. The selection of cheeses and breads and everything was huge and of impeccable quality.

Service was top flight, from arrival to departure and in between, especially in the dining room.

Gregans earns its Irish Hotel of the Year award from the Good Hotel Guide.
