  • beware before booking- its not just the construction

    This place is a big disappointment- have been here before- but this visit was not a good one. First, there is construction- see other recent reviews- second, the wifi is terrible- reminded me of the 1990's level of access. Constantly unable to even download my email. The noise level in my room was awful- first we had a leaking drain pipe from the AC unit that was built to drain into the bathtub-- yes, very tacky and noisy after the rainfall the past few days- then the running toilet - cute looking antique but suggest you hone up on your plumbing skills if planning to stay here. Then we had the WWF wrestlers in the room above us that woke us two of our three nights-- called front desk at 1150PM- waited 10 minutes for call to be picked up - claimed they would send security but the din did not die down for another hour.. The parking garage is automated but breaks down creating long lines trying to leave-- would have been nice to have sent someone over ?? don';t you think? self parking is a mere $40 per day. So beware- happy to be flying home to the cold and the snow... at least I will have peace and quiet.

  • Very disappointing visit!

    We have been to the Del several times over the past 15 years and loved every bit of it; however, our recent experience in November 2019 was such a disappointment! We are not sure we want to return. I booked an ocean view cabana room months ago and found out in September that the Cabanas are being renovated, so I asked the girl at the front desk to change our reservation in November to a Main Building ocean view room. I also mentioned that I do not want to stay in the Towers. When we arrived in November they give us an Ocean View Tower room. Such a disappointment! I asked again if we could have a Main Building Ocean View and was told there were no other rooms available. We then went to the Tower room and did not feel as though we were a part of the Del at all. If you looked out of the windows/balcony from one side you did see the ocean; however, if you were out on the balcony the views were a lot of construction with the smell of cigarettes most of the time. We also planned on lounging by the pool, but that was completely demolished. There were absolutely no concessions given for the construction, you still will pay a premium to stay there as i found out this time around. I just have such high expectations for the Del that even during renovations they would provide a perfect beach escape especially for the cost to stay there. Not sure if we will ever return as hotel guests.

    4 days into my 7 night stay and disappointed and unimpressed. Paid $100 extra a night for an oceanview, was NOT told when booking or at checkin construction would be going on right outside my room. Oceanview turned into a mostly construction view. Oh and those dreams I had about sitting outside on the balcony listening to the ocean breeze? Nope. Construction noise and 5 very nice guys standing by my balcony from 7a to 7p daily. I asked for an equivalent room at the same price and all they could offer was a lessor room (no balcony and partial ocean) for the same price or an equivalent room for $50 more per night. Um, excuse me? I am already overpaid for my $550 a night construction view for the past 4 days. No thaks Del! Will not be returning.

    was not told there was construction going on and our room was right above the site with no offer to move us to a better spot, also right next to the elevator and the bed was not comfortable. very disappointed.

  • Some Good with a lot of Bad

    We have visited the Hotel del Coronado in the past while passing through town for cocktails at the Babcock & Story bar. Daniel the bartender has always been welcoming and addressed us by name and makes a really good Bloody Mary. For that reason, when it came time for some friends to get married, we chose to stay at this iconic hotel because we had such a good experience at the lounge. We had two rooms reserved and having just stayed at a Curio in London, I was expecting a top notch hotel. The front desk upgraded our rooms based on my gold status to the Victorian building and found another in the same building for the wedding guests. The disparity in the quality of the rooms (for the same rate) was laughable. We had a beautiful coastal room and they had a closet. When we met down at the bar for evening cocktails I asked how their room was and I was appalled at what they told me but they had unpacked so thought it wasn't worth the effort to move. Note: the customer care department was very accommodating the next day and they just didn't feel like packing up and moving so at least they tried.

    Here is the not so good. It is "Winter Wonderland" season at The Del and there are kids and dogs everywhere! We felt we were staying on Disneyland Main Street. The crowds were ridiculous. You had to literally fight for a table or stool at the bar. After finally finding a spot and enjoying the day/evening at the Babcock & Story bar, we were shocked when we got the tab as the prices aren't marked on the menus so I guess we should have asked. Okay, we put that behind us.

    The next morning, bright and early (7:00 a.m.) the smoke detectors went off in the hotel to roust everyone out of bed. BTW, the walls are paper thin and we could hear the people next door into the wee hours of the morning so we had not had a lot of sleep. We evacuated and decided to get some coffee at the B&S bakery. 1 coffee, 2 croissants & two bottles of water - $42!

    In summary, it was overly crowded, over-priced and not memorable for any of us. Our consensus at the end of what was supposed to be a celebratory weekend was, none of us would spend our hard earned money to stay here again. There are other properties on Coronado that are far superior.

    I'm sorry we left you with this impression of the Hotel del Coronado. The holiday season is a busy time of the year at the Del, but that is no excuse for poor experiences. I'm sorry the large crowds and wait lines impacted your stay. I completely understand your frustrations with the fire alarm inconvenience--our guests' safety is our top priority. I apologize for not providing an exceptional experience, but I hope you find it in your heart to return one day and enjoy the restored beauty of our 131-year-old hotel.
