  • Can a military barracks be turned into a 4-star hotel?

by edmundfo on 2020-02-02 010:58 pm

The experiment attempted by this hotel is bold: To convert the barracks of the Oscarsborg Fortress into a resort hotel. This particular outcome indicates that such an experiment is difficult to succeed with. It seems like the original bunk beds are still in place. That is OK, but couldn't they at least provide mattresses and pillows of a slightly higher standard? The pillows were the worst I can remember encountering at any hotel.

Service attitude and standards seemed to be somewhat dependent on the staff. What I remember as particularly annoying here was how we ended up being stuck in the hotel restaurant for 2 hours because of the late check-in time, eating burned and overpriced burgers. The chefs should have been fired (were they recruited from a random kebab shop in Oslo?), and the waiter/reception staff could have had the decency to suggest exploring more of the island, including the much better and cheaper food options at nearby food trucks etc.

Due to the excessive heat when we visited the hotel, the rooms were very hot, and the staff were not really prepared for this, having to buy in extra fans. Again, the impression was that the hotel could be run in a more professional manner.

This being said, the location is very nice, in the middle of the Oslofjord on this historical island, and the hotel has great potential, if the management just could do something with these shortcomings.

    Dear Edmundfo,

Thank you for the feedback regarding your stay at Oscarsborg Hotel & Resort!
It is winter now, but I assume you stayed here during the summer as you mentioned the excessive heat when you visited the hotel. I understand that the heat must have been uncomfortable, we had some really warm days last summer, but it is quite rare in Norway that the hotels have rooms with air condition. The supply with fans are more of a standard. Our food rates are also quite normal, the food quality should anyway be good.
Regarding the bunk beds they are not original. We put them into the rooms in order to strengten our identity and history.

I am glad to read that you liked the location and that you think the hotel has great potential. We are working everyday to make sure that we meet the expectations to our guests both summer and winther.

    Best regards,
    Kjetil F

  • Restaurant with nice service and excellent views from the terrace

    by espen e on 2019-08-06 010:37 pm

The hotel restaurant is located on a hill, and from the terrace you have a nice view of the fjord and boat traffic. A great place to relax with good food and drinks. The menu is relatively traditional and family-friendly. The fish soup is available in two sizes and tasted good, with a lot of fish and shells, albeit with a bit of cream flavor. For the kids' simple hamburgers and mussels, very good french fries, or chips as it was called here, are served.

  • Only good for Mountain goats

    by Caroline P on 2019-07-14 01:17 pm

I stayed at this hotel as part of a historic tour of Norway and I would say that extremely fit people can enjoy it, but all older people should stay elsewhere and take a day trip to the fortress to learn about its historic role in WWI. The terain demands guest hike up steep slopes to their rooms and then up another steep gradient to the dining hall. Once you get there, we were told to go down 20+ steps to reception and then walk up those steps with our drinks if we wanted anything more than water with our dinner! Then at night a security gard made a great deal of noise and bothered me and several others without ever explaining that he was doing a job. Rather complete lack of management skill in hospitality I would say. Take the ferry over for a day trip. Unless you have the energy of a mountain goat.

  • Wonderful Stay

    by 184annien on 2019-03-15 02:55 am

We spent one night midweek and we're really impressed with the history, the ambience and the wonderful service. The staff went out of their way to look up us. It's unusual having been an old military barracks but the room was very comfortable, the views outstanding and the food very pleasant. It certainly stood out from your run of the mill hotel. Highly recommended

  • Nice on historic grounds

    by Harald G on 2018-08-13 04:30 am

We went to Oscarsborg for one night at the hotel on a weekend in August. This is a high quality hotel. But be ware of that many of the rooms are former soldier rooms. Thay are really nice! But the building looks like a barrack on the outside - naturally. Small, but very nice bathroom. Fridge in the room, but no content. Ask for a sea view! Half og the rooms have that. I believe there are rooms that are not in the former barrack as well.. The service was good. We had a problem with our key card though. But the most exciting part of staying here is of course the history of the island, and its most sentral part of Norways Word War II history! Google it and read!
