Local Attractions

Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is inextricably linked with the city of Amsterdam. The Grand is located in the heart of Amsterdam, placing guests close to dozens of historical and cultural attractions in the city. Guests can ask for the concierge to arrange for a private tour through the city by way of foot, bike, or canal boat. The Grand also organizes its own boating expeditions into the heart of the city that depart from a private jetty in front of hotel. These tours cruise along the narrowest canals, which are all part of the UNESCO World Heritage List for the city of Amsterdam.

The Royal Palace at Dam Square
Guests can walk to the Royal Palace at Dam Square from the hotel. Like The Grand, it served as the City Hall for centuries. King Louis Napoleon moved his court to the building, converting it into a Royal Palace at the height of the Napoleonic Wars. Even after the city regained its independence from France, the Dutch Royal Family continued to use the site as the Royal Palace.

De Nieuwe Kerk
Also accessible to guests at the Grand Amsterdam is the De Nieuwe Kerk (The New Church). Located near the Royal Palace, De Nieuwe Kerk is famous for its museum exhibitions. These stunning exhibitions include treasures from many cultures. Royal ceremonies occur frequently at the De Nieuwe Kerk, as well. In 1980, for instance, the inauguration of the former Queen of the Netherlands, Queen Beatrix, occurred at the church. And the new monarch of the country, Prince William-Alexander, married Princess Máxima at De Nieuwe Kerk in 2002.

De Negen Straatjes
Sofitel Legend encourages any guest interested in international shopping to visit De Negen Straatjes (The Nine Streets). De Negen Straatjes is in the heart of Amsterdam’s canal district. It is one of the city’s most delightful shopping areas. Just a two-minute walk from the Royal Palace on Dam Square, these picturesque streets straddle the city’s celebrated seventeenth-century canals. Guests can spend a fabulous day wandering from one shop to the next, finding a new designer boutique, art gallery, or jeweler around every street corner.

Anne Frank’s Residence
From De Negen Straatjes, guests can walk across the Prinsengracht to the Anne Frank House. The house occupies an important place in the history of both Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Anne’s diaries became world-famous after her father, Otto Frank, published them after her death. Her writings grant a glimpse into the life of a young Jewish girl during World War II.

The Fashion and Museum District
Guests should also consider visiting the Fashion & Museum District. This neighborhood is home to a number of internationally renowned museums, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum. Also located within the District are the Concertgebouw, the House of Bols, and Amsterdam's most exclusive shopping strip, the P.C. Hooftstraat.

The Vondelpark
Amsterdam is packed with hidden courtyards and beautiful city parks. With more than 10 million visitors arriving annually, the Vondelpark is undoubtedly the most famous in Amsterdam. Architect L.D. Zocher designed the Vondelpark back in 1865. Today, the park is a national heritage monument. Guests should not pass up an opportunity to visit the Vonderpark.

Keukenhof
Keukenhof is the world’s largest flower garden, located near the town of Lisse. Guests can admire many different types of gardens at the Keukenhof. Keukenhof is especially known throughout the Netherlands for its breathtaking tulip fields. It is truly a marvel to watch the countless tulips blossom during the springtime at the Keukenhof.
