  • Disappointing Visit

    This is a lovely old resort in a lovely setting. We arrived after driving through a storm. We went to check in and realized the the lobby was dark. The hotel had no power. The staff (mostly young) seemed to think this was an adventure. We were shown to our room (by flashlight). We had to walk up four flights of stairs since the elevators weren't working. The room was adequate, on the small side, but nice. The bathroom was clean and had been redone, but the sink was the smallest I've ever seen. No place to put toiletries. The power was out for hours. We couldn't take our suitcases up the stairs because they were heavy, and having to go up the stairs so many times was hard on us (both in our late 70's). The restaurant was closed, so no dinner. The staff did put out crackers and cheese, water, pretzels and apples. We finally went to bed, found that we were given a flashlight and then the power came on. We had breakfast the next morning. The staff really pushed the buffet which was okay, not great.
    I know the hotel was not at fault for the power outage, but I asked a number of times if our bill could be reduce for the inconvenience with no adequate response. Again, I asked at checkout and the young staffer said she couldn't make that decision. I really think management should have reduced our bill.

  • Really a Treat

    While it's history goes way back to the late 1800's, the decor and everything else is up to your modern standards. Our room was on the 4th floor, and on the smaller side, so if that's important to you, ask for a room elsewhere in the hotel, or in the adjacent annex just across the small road. The staff is terrific, and very courteous and accommodating. We signed for our drinks from the bar and sat outside with them around the fire pit. Lovely, all you could possibly want breakfast (extra charge), and fine meals even in the bar area. Lovely pool available and its location is within walking distance of Kingsbrae Gardens, or even downtown, if you are the "walker" type.

    Being a BONVoY Member, advance check in was straight forward and reception staff was professional and helpful. Part of my requests as a Member is for a room close to an elevator and our room was the absolute farthest possible away within the hotel. Additionally, the room was small, cramped with twin beds and no seating other than a n uncomfortable desk chair. However, the small bathroom (shower only) was renovated and very functional.
    We ate two buffet breakfasts during our stay and both provided a good selection of high quality and well prepared food. We did not dine in the hotel restaurant, although it apparently has a good reputation.
    It was an interesting experience to visit this historic property but we would not return.

  • Friendly staff at an historic, grand, and luxurious hotel

    We arrived later in the evening, and we were extremely impressed by the front-desk agent. She was so friendly and efficient, and she anticipated our needs. What a treat after a long drive. The interiors of the hotel have historic glamour with a slight modern touch. We were thrilled with our spacious king bed room, with a cute Juliet balcony and a water view. Staff in the lounge were welcoming, gracious, and personable, making for a great ending to our day. The hotel is set in an elegant small town, and everything is walkable. We had such a great stay!

  • Walk-able to town

    The Algonquin is a beautiful old historic building, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean, with comfortable bedding, but quite a small bathroom. Although the rooms seem to be newly renovated, the hallways seem dark, dingy and in need of fresh paint and new carpeting. St. Andrews is a cute little town, and it might be more fun to stay on Water Street the next time.
