  • What lies beneath the kilt?

by pigcoon on 2019-07-20 03:54 pm

Not sure what the lukewarm reviews were about cause this place was awesome. I guess it depends on your standards. We typically go to under $200 hotels; this was far above the norm. On arrival we were greeted by friendly bell staff. The staff were not only friendly but took ownership and pride in their work and the mission of the whole resort. For example, the pool maintenance staff, knew the value of a 104 deg hot tub and that this was meaningful to the guest experience. Pool was not crowded (midweek). Outdoor and indoor pool. The water slide was much more exciting than expected. The hot tub jets were the strongest we have encountered. Breakfast buffet on the porch was amazing. Awesome omelette bar. Two varieties of smoothies, delicious. This was in addition to all the other fare. Breakfast was the only meal we had at the hotel. Downsides: bikes were in sub-optimal condition, gears not working properly. This despite the mandatory daily resort fee for these extra amenities. Bring your own bike. There were only 2 left at 11 a.m. and both were broken. Friendly staff were not knowledgeable in how to fix them. Insufficient space in the rooms for toiletries. Insufficient charging stations in the room. Wish there were fridges in the rooms. In summary this was a very clean hotel with two huge pools, great fitness room, terrific staff, comfortable beds, comfortable bathrobes, great place for a family reunion, centrally located. Just terrific!

  • Hotel stay

    by CarolM2333 on 2019-07-20 02:13 pm

This is a beautiful old hotel to stay at, it's wonderful that it's now managed by Marriott. The rooms are stunning, and the food was delicious. We enjoyed eating dinner on the porch which is sprawling and comfortable.

  • Exquisite Romantic Historical Resort Hotel...Stunning Views On The Golf Course...Many Dining Options!

    by Alan Z on 2019-07-19 01:02 pm

Dial yourself back in time to another year, actually over 100 years ago. Beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting on the high area of Saint Andrews. Not a beach front hotel, but think golfing, tennis, spa, pool, hiking, campfires at night, fine dining and close to the Historic Town of Saint Andrews. We stayed in the original area of the hotel, but there is a new addition as well. I cannot speak for that area and their rooms. We had a very nice King Size bedroom with a great view overlooking the grounds. The bath albeit was small but updated with glass enclosed shower and modern sink. The bed were very, very comfortable and the pillows where like clouds. My wife being a Titanium Platinum Lifetime Elite Member had extra towels, pillows and a printed welcome card with delicious chocolates and cookies waiting. Nice Touch! We would expect this in a high end Marriott Autograph Hotel. The rooms and common areas were clean, but if you like contemporary and modern, everything here is historical and dated to that era. Service and staff members were very professional, friendly and caring to help you with any request. There is only a very small gift shop, so that is a downside if you want to buy something. At night they have campfires in the front that help makes the evening romantic. The views from the golf course especially on the back nine holes are breathtaking overlooking the sea and the town of Saint Andrews in the distance. Overall experience was fantastic!

  • An Exceptionally Nice Historical Property

    by Dawg_Lover1 on 2019-07-19 03:17 am

This is a very old property that has many of the problems associated with such venues. However, the Algonquin has done an outstanding job in overcoming such issues (e.g. the heating and cooling worked seamlessly.

We had a one bedroom suite which was very spacious and well appointed. The only problem was a relatively tiny bathroom (by today's standards).

The pool/hot tub area was exceptionally spacious and functional. However, the fitness center (24 hours) could use some updating.

Public rooms are exceptional grand, nicely reflecting the hotels heritage.

  • High potential poorly managed

    by Joseph M on 2019-07-15 02:12 pm

I don't leave reviews often, only for places I think have potential. This place has broken some cardinal rules of hospitality and the manager should be replaced as soon as possible.

No towels at the pool - very tacky they make you bring them from your room.

Walls are all beat up, wallpaper coming off, base boards are disgusting

Cleaning staff is mediocre at best, dust everywhere - room was not cleaned at 5pm.

Hotel staff acts like a bunch of teenagers, have no hospitality skills, maybe they are coming here for camp

No nuts/snacks at bar when you are having a cocktail.

Furniture in the room is beat up

Now all of this being said the area and property are priceless...if you ever have the chance to visit make it a priority.
