  • Form over function

    by piper49M on 2019-10-08 03:00 am

Very disappointing. A triumph of form over function. Renovated by Christian Lacroix in 2014 this supposedly five star hotel is already looking very tired. Cutting edge design may be one thing but when it comes at the mercy of comfort, practicality and value for money, it is another.
We checked in for a 40th birthday weekend to a classic double room for three nights at 207 Euros per night, 20 Euros per night parking and no breakfast. On the day, Booking.com was advertising a rate of 150 Euros per night including breakfast for the first night we were there.
There is virtually no storage space in the room - no drawers and a very small and dilapidated armoir that was not deep enough to fit hanging clothes without them being side on. The bedside tables were just wooden logs on end. We requested a small chest of drawers or similar but were given a tatty old tea trolley on which to stack folded clothing.
The bathroom was very small, which is of itself not such a bad thing, however in this one the size of the tub was minute, the shower hose was not long enough to reach the wall attachment from the mixer so I could stand underneath and with the tub being so narrow, the shower space was compromised and water went all over the floor. The toilet leaked, the seat did not fit the toilet and never had. Staff did attend to the toilet leak but the hotel did not have a longer shower hose.
The staff were very god and tried to help.

  • Good location. Mediocre staff

by annliptak on 2019-10-06 03:28 pm

Great location. Cool decor. Spa impossible to contact or book with hotel staff very unhelpful. The spa did not have vm and no one at the desk. A sign said check with hotel staff at main desk and when I did they would not assist me. Tried for 3 days to get an appointment.

    Dear Madame LIPTAK

We thank you to take the time the share your experience following your stay in our Hotel.
We are very sorry that it was not at the level of your expectations

Concerning your problems to get a appointement to the SPA, first Spa service and Reception are two different services and for that reason Reception don't take any reservation for the SPA. Our front team is capable to check availabilities on their planning and to welcome you and present you the SPA area. but without agreement of the SPA managing team they are not allowed to take any reservation for the SPA.

Second thing during your stay, the SPA was almost full of massage every days and we agree that it was very complicated to have someone at the SPA front Office at your time you went there, they were in theatment with guest most of time.

All our staff is working to help our guest as much as possible in their area of expertise.

    Best regards

  • Good 5* hotel in a good location

by AllanChg on 2019-10-04 04:26 pm

I have been to Arles many times and stayed in Jules Cesar before. The current iteration is nice, much better than the version before the 2014 upgrade. In the end, it still gets the chain hotel feel and not quite the top tier of the 5*s. On the other hand, the location is great if you want to get into town easily, and the valet parking is handy. Since there are very few choices of good hotels in Arles, this is definitely one place you should look into.

  • Between poor and average and definitely NOT 5*

    by tessie1 on 2019-10-01 04:42 am

My major problem with this place was a health and safety issue. The lift for disabled guests wasn't working, (a problem the hotel has apparently had for some time), but much more serious was the exterior metal handrail which was, (literally), pulling out of its concrete supports and leaning and wobbling like an extreme version of the Tower of Pisa - seriously dangerous for all guests, let alone my disabled husband. We mentioned this twice, but I'd doubt if anything is done.
Our room was alright, garishly designed by Mr Lacroix - not to our taste, but everyone is different and perhaps some guests love the violent abstracts, sickly pinks and nauseous yellows. I think that whoever commissioned Mr Lacroix has made a mistake. This period building should be an oasis of calm-it actually is headache inducing. Our room had an odd odour and on investigation, turned out to be ancient cigarette smoke clinging relentlessly to the curtains. Evidently smoking was permitted in some rooms once upon a time. The incredibly small bathroom had an incredibly small and narrow bath, totally impossible to move about in - perfect for a small child, but no one else. No bath mat was provided, (health and safety again.) Towels were rough and raspy. This place would merit 4/10 if scoring could be awarded. The good points were; a charming and efficient evening receptionist, convenient location, comfortable beds and efficient air-conditioning. But 5*?! Is this based upon the fact that the hotel has a spa and pool? I'd love to know how a 5* was awarded and why such high prices are charged. Perhaps I might be enlightened?

  • A bit underwhelming

    by Velouria101 on 2019-09-30 03:27 am

We spent six nights here, returning to Arles after many years for what we hoped would be a special experience. We knew about the Lacroix makeover, and were prepared for a bit of garish decoration here and there, but we were surprised when our (first) room turned out to be quite a small and dark room with very little natural light, and one which was clearly adapted for wheelchair use which meant some of the fittings (like a shaving mirror at hip height) were not so useful for us. It was also a bit disconcerting having a guard rail around the toilet. As far as we could tell the hotel was not full, so we were curious as to why we were put in this particular room at all.

Our hot water also stopped working on day 2, and my husband found a nail sticking out of the bathroom floor (by treading on it in the dark.). We mentioned it all to reception in the morning, then mentioned it again when we got back from our day out and found nothing had been done...then we mentioned it again after coming back from dinner. At 21.00 we were moved to another room, having had to re-pack and then unpack again. This second room had a bigger window but the entire room was painted bright crimson...a bit like sleeping inside a lung. There was a small damaged chair in one corner but nowhere for two people to spread out apart from the bed or windowsill. We couldn't face the prospect of another move, though, so we put up with it.

We appreciated the friendly and amiable concierge and reception staff, and it was great to have our car safely parked for us every day, but this really didn't feel like a five-star experience. It was great to be back in Arles but we won't stay at this hotel again. I don't like leaving negative feedback, but given what the hotel charges, the defects here were a bit too much to ignore.
