  • A Very Disappointing Hotel with a Very Short-Term View

    by RGE49 on 2019-10-03 011:32 pm

There are some good things about this hotel which I will mention in fairness. But I must start with an explanation of the low rating. it is based on how they handled the fact that we left two days earlier than planned. We originally booked for eight nights through American Express but a month ago decided to leave two days early to travel to Florence. I have no idea whether American Express failed to make the adjustment (who knew we changed our plans because we booked the Florence hotel through them and obviously can't be in two hotels in two different cities at the same time) or whether there was confusion on the hotel end. The cancellation policy for this hotel is 48 hours prior to arrival.

I guess this gets us to the existential question of the meaning of the word "cancellation." I wanted to cancel the last two nights. Since the person who checked us in thought we were there for eight and I said six, that was more than enough notice. Unless they interpret cancellation to mean "any changes not made 48 hours before you show up" mean a penalty. When I checked out I was charged for two nights at 807 Euros per night . Ridiculous.

I spent more time than I wanted to on the phone with Amex and dealing with the hotel. All I was told by the hotel was that "It's American Express's fault." I'm thinking "Gee, this is one of the top rated hotels in Venice and was recommended by Amex. We're still in the high season. Is their business so bad that they need to gouge me for two more nights?" I guess that will pay off in the short term--maybe. Suffice it to say, I'm never coming back.

Had they been more rational and gracious about leaving in six days rather than eight, I could have overlooked other things. The hotel is a bit shabby and long-in-the-tooth. Or the fact that we paid for a lagoon view and were given the choice of a garden view and a lagoon side peak. Maybe they gave us a worse room because they knew we were leaving early. I could have also overlooked the fact that they booked a loud private dinner right next to the restaurant when we dined there last night. All of the guests complained. One woman asked for her food order to be sped up so she could leave.

If you don't mind a hotel that is indifferent to developing long-term guest relationships, it does have its good points. The food in the restaurant was superb. The service was professional if a bit slow (maybe because of the loud private party which they said they couldn't do anything about). It would have been wiser simply to close the dining room for the night.

The Oriental Bar is quite nice with good drinks and very good service.

The location is a convenient one, right off the lagoon so kind of chaotic when you go out in the morning, near a charming neighborhood with good restaurants.

Venice is a remarkable city which we visit often. There are plenty of other highly-rated hotels that are conveniently located near nice neighborhoods with good restaurants. My wife and I look forward to trying one of them on our next trip to Venice.

And putting the bad memory of Metropole Hotel out of our minds for good.

    Owner Response
    Dear "RGE49",

We would like to thank you for your recent stay at our Metropole Hotel: we are honored you were our guest in timeless and enchanting Venice.
We do care a lot about our guests' comments and suggestions as we try our utmost to offer the best of service and welcome in town: the Metropole is a unique property and our goal is to reach and fully satisfy our clients' expectations offering tailor made personalized services.

We have carefully checked your reservation that we received through American Express for one of our typical Grand Deluxe rooms, without lagoon view.
At our Metropole Hotel, we feature unique room typologies, all different in style and character, including beautiful rooms and Suites with a stunning view on the lagoon of Venice or with amazing terraces and private hammam. The view from those rooms is really gorgeous and memorable!
Our rooms and Suites with lagoon view are very requested at our hotel and they are available in all reservation systems.

We kindly inform you that all rooms at our Metropole hotel are special and feature precious details: in particular, as we have a great relationship with American Express and do care a lot about our partnership and valued clients, we gladly offered all benefits including a complimentary room upgrade to one of our precious Prestige rooms. Our Prestige Rooms are original and eclectic: each one is unique, steeped in atmosphere and embellished with fabrics reminiscent of Venetian stately homes. In particular, the Prestige room we offered to you in free upgrade overlooks our relaxing Citrus Garden and the roofs of Venice.

We are sorry to understand only after your departure that our Metropole Hotel did not meet your taste: the Metropole offers emotions involving all the senses. Eccentric, warm, eclectic, it is a place where the d?cor becomes an emotional experience, where each detail tells a story.
Because of our eclectic soul, our impressive heritage (here Vivaldi lived many years of his life and composed the Four Seasons) and our passion for Art and Collections, the Metropole has become the destination for discerning travelers, Art lovers and musicians, as wells as for all travelers passionate for authenticity.

We are sorry to understand that during your stay some misunderstandings aroused with any third parties: our terms and conditions are very transparent and clear and we are used to properly inform our partners and valued clients about all details at time of the reservation, in order to have the opportunity to adjust any conditions on a tailor made basis if necessary.

We do apologize if during your stay, in very peak season and without enough notice, it was difficult to change conditions of your reservation, despite our attempts and good faith efforts. We trust in your understanding and hope we will have the chance to welcome you back in a near future: we would love to have the opportunity to show you that we do care a lot about you and our valued guests. It would be a pleasure to personally welcome you and offer very special conditions as well as an even more special complimentary upgrade to one of our fabulous Suites!

Regarding our Met Restaurant, 1 Michelin Star, it is a magic place for dining: we pay great attention to the atmosphere and to offer an attentive service for memorable experiences. We are sorry if that evening a special occasion was celebrated in a separate room. The main Restaurant, with limited capacity, was fully booked and we received positive feedbacks from our guests. We are deeply sorry to understand that you were not happy with the atmosphere: we sincerely thank you for your notice that will help us to improve our services.
We hope to have the pleasure to welcome you back to our restaurant: we will reserve for you the best table at our intimate Rose Room by Raptus & Rose, where you can enjoy dishes with a floral look and a selection of innovative cocktails to sip on soft sofas for an aperitif or informal Michelin-starred dinner. It will be our pleasure to offer you the most delicious cocktail in Venice, at your choice!

We thank you for your suggestions and we look forward to welcoming you to our Metropole home soon again.
    Best regards,

  • Good Hotel But Not to Everyone's Taste

    by P Michael H on 2019-09-28 010:40 pm

My wife and I spent three nights at the Metropole Hotel in late September 2019. It was a decent stay.

This hotel is strange combination of modern and vintage. The facilities of our room were generally modern. The Internet access was very fast and easy to connect to. The bed was adequately firm and the linens were nice.

The bathroom was very small, consisting of a single sink, a toilet, a bidet, and a tub with a shower. I was not happy with the bathroom.

First, the bidet is completely unnecessary and just takes up precious space in the small bathroom. Most (almost all) hotels do not have bidets and neither do most homes. Women manage to remain fresh and clean without a bidet so get rid of it and use the space for something more useful.

Second, I absolutely HATE a shower in a tub. It's difficult and dangerous getting into and out of the tub. Then, standing in the tub is insecure because of the curved, slippery tub bottom. Finally, the shower portion was enclosed by a piece of glass about a meter wide. When we used the shower, it always leaked a lot of water on the floor. If space is tight, I'd much rather have a room with a shower and no tub. Take out the bidet and put in a real shower.

The other strange thing about this hotel is how dark it is. The lobby is DARK. When you come in from outside in the middle of the day, you have to pause to let your eyes adjust to the darkness. For things that you need to see, they have a small light on a goose-neck to illuminate it. For example, there's a restaurant menu in the lobby and they had to put a light on it so people could read it.

The walls and the furniture are also dark. The overall effect is somewhat depressing.

The hallways are also dark. The lights in the hallways are very low wattage. It's so dark that you would trip over something left in the hallway because you couldn't see it.

The room, itself, was adequately lighted.

The restaurant for breakfast was very nice (and adequately lighted). The staff was excellent.

The other aspect of the hotel that I didn't like is that they use physical keys instead of keycards. I much prefer keycards for the following reasons:

    1. When you go to pick up your key, the front desk person may be helping someone else and you just have to wait.
    2. I'm concerned about security. Anyone could go to the front desk and ask for my room key.
    3. For a woman traveler, she announces her room number to anyone within earshot by asking for her key. Hotels with keycards never voice the room number but just write the room number on the card envelope.

My travel agent had recommended the Londra Palace (in the same area) and I stopped by that hotel to check it out. From that brief inspection I would choose that hotel in the future.

  • Amazing experience

    by brzy30 on 2019-09-16 011:04 pm

My fianc? and I planned to surprise his parents for their 50th wedding anniversary. We called and emailed the hotel to tell them everything that was happening. We stayed here for 4 nights and the whole time we were here, it was perfect. They surprise was phenomenal. We all got in at the same time and same day, but for the hotel to know that it was all a surprise, they made sure it wasn't going to get ruined. The first night we got a table at the hotels restaurant, which is a Michelin star, and that's where we surprised his parents. The staff is amazing here, our bedroom was perfect. Everything was clean and tidy and the breakfast here was good. I highly recommend staying here ??

  • FABULOUS hotel, FABULOUS staff, FABULOUS service, FABULOUS location!!!

    by SIBBO69 on 2019-08-21 07:03 am

    Fri 16 Aug 2019 thru Mon 19 Aug 2019, x2.

FABULOUS hotel, FABULOUS staff, FABULOUS service, FABULOUS location!!!

FABULOUS location a few hundred yards/metres along from "Palazzo San Marco", and directly opposite "San Giorgio Maggiore", with views over the lagoon (else side-view across canal, else side/rear-view across gardens etc) - we paid a premium for "lagoon view", which was well worthwhile!

FABULOUS room - the whole hotel is somewhat ornately decorated, with what might be considered "OTT" (over-the-top) elsewhere, but in Venice, it ALL seems perfectly "at home"! Our room had 2 double windows, oth with external shutters, plus A/C. Bed was perfectly comfy, good 6-footer "queen" size (UK), plus table/2-chairs, desk etc, plus bathroom with full-bath and shower-over, plus toilet AND bidet etc. Mini bar and safe to boot. ALL in all, a great room! Maybe, in hindsight, I might have paid more for a larger room (ie "suite"), but we weren't planning to spend much time in-room, so what's the point? get out and enjoy Venice!

FABULOUS staff - everyone we met was nicely turned out in matching uniforms etc, and everyone was always very friendly and helpful, and very attentive - nothing was ever too much trouble! In addition, all staff, especially "Concierge", were more than happy to help with suggestions and/or bookings (in our case) for restaurants, things to do/see, water-taxi, etc.

FABULOUS food - I booked via web, so opted for "inclusive breakfast", which was great - you can either sit in the garden, on lovely comfy chairs, else in their beautiful breakfast room, ornately-decorated, under the A/C! Buffet??? WOW!!! Amazing selection of food - cereals, croissants, bread, fruit, eggs/bacon, cakes - plus anything else you could think of, brought to your table. Wonderful food, great service, not to be missed!

FABULOUS bar - we used the "Oriental Bar" (though curiously not very noticeably "Oriental"???) every night for pre-/post-dinner drinks, and also pop-in on the way in/out of the hotel. Lovely comfy seating, great service, great drinks/cocktails choices, great staff!

We spent 3 nights / 4 days at the Metropole, and LOVED it!!!
