  • Beautiful hotel but with room for improvement

    by chuvash1 on 2020-01-19 09:20 am

Let's start with 2 disclaimers: I came to this hotel having heard mixed reviews from 2 well traveled friends and the Old Cataract has to be judged against the criteria of a 5*+ given that Accor is positioning it at the group's flagship location. I'm not trying to be snobbish, I'm simply rating it against Sofitel's own description: Versailles but better

Obviously this is an excellent hotel, the best in Aswan by a mile, and I would stay there again without hesitation. Food is good, rooms are large and confortable, the resort is gorgeous and tbh I thought prices were very reasonable. Was I blown away? No, and let me tell you why.

I don't think the hotel fails at anything bigly, but I think the hotel misses a few points by inches each time and overall it gives a weird impression of missed opportunities.

Let me give you a few examples:
    1. The beds in twin rooms are singles (which is advertised when you book), but I just don't understand why you wouldn't put 2 queen beds. The result is a lot of empty space and a massive terrace (with gorgeous views).
    2. My friend had warned me about the staff's English (e.g. I asked for towels and was given water bottles) and suggested Accor should invest in classes, I couldn't agree more.
    3. I found there was a lack of "above and beyond" approach to service, e.g. one of our cards got stuck in the ATM for about 10' and the answer from the hotel was "Don't worry you just have to call the bank operating the ATM". My view is that at a 5* resort any (appropriate) guest request should be answered by "Yes Sir, let me do it for you Sir". That wasn't the case.
    4. While I know that very few tourists drive in Egypt, I was baffled by the lack of parking option (hotel description mentions bus parking, which is a bit deceptive). I get they have limited space on-site but I'm not going to believe that they can't find 2-3 spots somewhere nearby in the city for guest parking.

In terms of tips, I would strongly suggest to stay in the new building (unless you're booking a historical suite) for the view. All rooms have views on the Nile, Elephantine island and the beautiful old building. If you stay in the old building, chances are you'll get garden view and/or views on the newer 10-story ugly building.

Eating options were overall excellent. The breakfast is served by the Nile and food quality is excellent. The terrace and bar are similarly excellent (the menu could have a few more Egyptian options). Contemplating the sunset from the promenade was the highlight of our stay. I did not get a chance to dine at 1902, but to be honest it didn't look very appealing from the outside.

Is this the best hotel I've ever stayed at? No, but it's solid. A few points of improvements are easily actionable and would have made our stay even better. Perhaps a less pompous description from Accor would also lower expectations a tinny bit ;)

  • Amazing.

    by Grace F on 2020-01-18 08:26 pm

This hotel is out of a book! We had an amazing time. Excellent service (best I've ever had at a hotel). Very nice breakfast included . The pool is very nice - amazing views- we used it even in January although albeit chilly when the sun was setting. Pool staff got my young kids floaties without us asking. The indoor pool and hammam (steam room) also divine. I highly recommend and will go out of my way when back in Egypt to stay a couple nights again here.

  • Wonderful place

    by Sahar H on 2020-01-17 09:12 pm

Extavegant royal place. Even the ordinary rooms are very spaceous ,and very very elegant. All facilities are there even a coffee machine in the room. The views are beyond incredible. The staff are very efficient ,professional ,yet friendly and treat you like royalty. You get a free tour to see the presidential Winston Churchill suite and Agatha Christie suite where Death on the nile was written .

Thankfully we only stayed here for three nights as although Aswan was stunning and our suite in the new building was beautiful all the hotel restaurants were not heated and were freezing cold. We chose to dine in the famous 1902 restaurant and the whole experience was dreadful! My battered prawns had not had the shells removed and my sea bass still had bones in it!! When we complained about the cold a waiter brought my wife a blanket? Just what you would want for a so called FINE DINING experience? I left half way through the meal as I was so cold I could not feel my legs! A thoroughly dreadful experience
This hotel does not deserve its reputation at all as people visit Egypt for the Winter warmth. They pay through the nose for it and the hotel does not have the common decency to use the central heating. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

  • History, luxury and nature!

    by Philip P on 2020-01-14 11:06 am

Where Agatha Christie, Aga Khan and Winston Churchill felt cherished... well, we too! Don't forget to visit those super-suites!
Excellent infrastructure in- and outside. We were in the new building, that was installed with modern confort while respecting the history. Stunning views on a beautiful part of the Nile at the level of an island with ruins from a temple.
Excellent breakfast and dinners. Quite good pool and nice outside pool (heated).
Not everything was perfect however: water temperature difficult to regulate in the shower of our room; broken jacuzzis in the outside pool; bit particular and suboptimal spa.
Friendly personnel and our experience an amazing thing for Egypt: no annoying sticky people trying to sell something or to obtain a tip!
    Summary: SUPER experience!
