  • "Sorry but the bar has closed for the evening..."

    by ginger_traveller2000 on 2020-01-20 06:33 am

The hotel is very grand in the public spaces and the staff are very friendly and helpful but there were a couple of things that I would have expected better for an establishment that trades on a very high quality reputation, and charges accordingly.

The main gripe was that we arrived back to the hotel at 12.30am and the main bar appeared to be closed. I asked a member of staff if there was a residents bar to be told that there wasn't. I asked if you could get a drink anywhere in the hotel to be told that it was only room service. We were a group of three so were staying in different rooms which would make that less sociable than we wanted. I have never been in a hotel that stops serving residents that early. I would have understood if it was 4 in the morning!! However there are lots of other bars in the area that you can go for a quiet drink before turning in for the night.

Secondly, we went to the pool in the late afternoon and I thought that the floor in the ladies changing room was particularly grubby- lots of hair and general grime on the floor. Definitely wear the hotel slippers! The pool is a good size but i could imagine if you have kids that want to mess about while other people are trying to swim lengths this might cause problems since it's not very wide. The jacuzzi sits four comfortably or six at a squeeze, same with the sauna.

On the plus side, the breakfast is great, if a bit pricey. There is a wide selection of items to choose from- cold, hot, bakery, etc. However, one gripe I had was that while poached eggs on toast is included in the buffet price of ?25, if you want poached eggs and avocado it's an extra ?5. Quite an expensive avocado...

  • Fabulous Service in a beautiful Hotel

    by Mrs_C_K_10 on 2020-01-19 05:22 am

We stay here frequently both as a couple and with our children on this occasion we came with our children. The hotel is beautiful and the staff and service are amazing and exactly as you would expect from a 5 star hotel. Nothing was too much trouble. The reception staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient the valets parked our car and delivered our bags quickly and housekeeping was excellent the rooms were comfortable and very clean. But I must give a special mention to the two ladies that served us afternoon tea, they were just lovely and so kind to our children, Waldorf management should be very proud of Leyrae (sp?) and her Lithuanian colleague, it was a wonderful afternoon tea the food was fabulous but it was the service that made it. The harpist and and pianist were appreciated and my husband enjoyed the savoury afternoon tea option too. Tea collection was extensive. Many thanks Waldorf- we will certainly return in the future.

  • Excellent views and delightful staff

by elewisku on 2020-01-18 09:33 am

The hotel is gorgeous and has outstanding views of the castle. The staff were very polite and accommodating. The rooms and bathrooms are large. The hotel is, also, in a great location convenient to the castle and royal mile and princes street shopping.

  • Good but not special

by Bucksvoyager on 2020-01-16 02:26 am

Our first impressions of the hotel were very good. We received a very nice welcome. It was early December and we were cold and wet after waking from the train station so the offer of some mulled wine while we checked in was much appreciated.

We had a nice big room with a good view of the castle. Then we ran into a few issues as we settled in.

The wardrobe was small for a double room, especially as the room was big, and it had a short rail for hanging clothes which ran from the back of the wardrobe to the front, rather than side-to-side. The rail was very well stocked with hangers but as it was short, we couldn't actually hang up a lot of clothes. When one of us tried to run a bath the metal control for the plug just came off once it was touched. The shower control was very fiddly and it was difficult to get the water pressure and temperature at the right settings. The air conditioning was noisy and we had to turn it off at night so that we could sleep.

On the positive side, the hotel is in a good location, we had a very comfortable bed, and the service from all the staff was very helpful, efficient and friendly.

In conclusion, we had a good stay at the hotel and, overall, we enjoyed our stay, but for the price I would expect something a bit more special.
